On This Date, 41 Years Ago, The Jackson 5 Had A #1 R&B Hit With The Single, "ABC." The Song Would Go On To Reach That Same Position On The Billboard Pop Chart A Few Weeks Later.


Natives Of Gary, Indiana, The Jackson 5 Came To Motown In 1968, After Being Discovered By Gladys Knight At Chicago's Regal Theater And Subsequently Being Introduced To Motown Executives By Motown Artist And Producer, Bobby Taylor.

With Youngest Brother, Michael, As The Primary Lead Singer,The Jackson 5 Became A Pop Music Phenomenon During The 1970s Their Personal And Concert Appearances Caused Mass Hysteria - As They Performed A Brand Of Music Geared Toward Adolescents And Teens, And Was A Mix Of R&B, Funk And Pop. The Genre Came To Be Known As "Bubble-Gum Soul."

The Jackson 5 Were The First Act In Recording History To Have Their First Four Major Label Singles ("I Want You Back, "ABC," "The Love You Save And "I'll Be There) Go To #1 On The BillBoard Top 100. The Group's Other Major Hits Include: "Never Can Say Goodbye," "Sugar Daddy," "Mama's Pearl," "Maybe Tomorrow" And "Dancing Machine." Both Michael And Jermaine Jackson Had Solo Success, Respectively, With The Hits "Got To Be There," "Daddy's Home," "Rockin' Robin," "That's How Love Goes," "Ben," "Live It Up" And "Wanna Be Where You Are."

As A Performing Group, The Jackson 5 Began With The Three Oldest Brothers,, Tito, Jackie, And Jermaine. Rehearsing under their father's guidance, They Were Eventually Joined By Marlon And Michael In 1964/65.

The Jackson 5 Won Gary's First City-Wide Talent Show. In 1966. They Also Recorded Seven Tracks For Gordon Keith's Steeltown Records, A Small Label Based In Gary. One Of The Singles, "Big Boy," Was A Regional Hit And Was Picked Up By Atco For National Distribution.

The Success Of "Big Boy" Led To Appearances In Near-By Chicago Nightclubs And A Tour On The "Chitlin' Circuit" (Collective Name Given To The String Of Performance Venues Throughout The Eastern And Southern United States That Were Considered Safe And Acceptable For Black Musicians, Comedians, Dancers And Other Entertainers To Perform During The Period Of Racial Segregation In America - - From At Least The Late 1800s Through The 1960s).

After Winning The Amateur Talent Show At Chicago's Regal Theater, Three Weeks In A Row, The Brothers Were Invited To Apollo Amateur Night in New York In 1967, and Came In First Place. Michael (Who Was Around 9 At The Time) Stole The Show With His Singing And Dancing.

Following A Successful Audition For Berry Gordy And Other Motown Artists And Executives In 1968, The Jackson 5 Were Introduced To A National Audience On October 18, 1969, By Diana Ross, Via The ABC Television Variety Show, The Hollywood Palace.

The Jackson 5 Stayed With Motown Until 1976. In 1997, The Group Was Inducted Into The Rock 'N Roll Hall Of Fame Michael, Who Died June 25, 2009, Became The Most Successful Recording Artist In Music History.
