In From Across The Web, Short Film Pick

By Aiyana Ma’at

VIDEO: I was struck with familiar feelings as I watched this short but powerful documentary. 5 women within the African, Carribean, and South Asian diasporas spoke candidly about skin color and the toll that discrimination from within their own race has taken on them and their communities. Woooow. I could have easily been listening to 5 women of color from NY, Georgia, Mississippi, Ohio, and Boston. My crystal clear revelation–our stories are all the same. This short film is needed more than we even realize. Watch and share with your daughters (blood and otherwise) and their daughters. If we ever stand to stop the devastating effects of Shadeism we have to begin with education. It is a huge key to our liberation.

This documentary short is an introduction to the issue of shadeism, the discrimination that exists between the lighter-skinned and darker-skinned members of the same community. This documentary short looks specifically at how it affects young womyn within the African, Caribbean, and South Asian diasporas. Through the eyes and words of 5 young women and 1 little girl – all females of colour – the film takes us into the thoughts and experiences of each. Overall, ‘Shadeism’ explores where shadeism comes from, how it directly affects us as womyn of colour, and ultimately, begins to explore how we can move forward through dialogue and discussion.

Hello Saint,

Stop the BS about all this shadism and that education is the key. Black America's only permanent solution to all of our problems is to accept God offer that we become a sovereign people on a reasonable and fertile portion of this continent that we could call our very own country with borders to worship God, pursue life, liberty, happiness and prosperity in our own way.

Our sovereignty must come first since it is the permanent solution to all of our problems!

Do you understand?

If we take the community as say, the community of America, or better yet the World community, then shadeism becomes even more ominous, does it not?

And we should not forget all the light skinned women who want to be darker, spending hours radiating themselves with harmful UV in order to get darker. Interesting phenomenon.

Well if we can take our BIA history into consideration when we talk about things like this because it could very well have something to do with this...

have you ever heard our president called a "house *****", the expression "uncle tom"...and this is only talking about things originating during slavery into consideration on the subject of light skin v dark skin...

The lighter the skin the more chance you were a direct decendant of the masters and you got to be the" house *****...dark skin got to work outin the fields of th plantations...does not to this day the haves get treated different than the have nots? (smile)

( OH AND LETS NOT FORGET THAT BACK THEN THE SLAVE FEMALE HAD MORE HUMAN AND CIVIL RIGHTS TAHN THE WHITE WIFE...AS I SAID THE SLAVE MISTRESS COULD OWN HER OWN HOME GIVEN BY THE MASTER....THE WHITE FEMALE COULD NOT OWN, BECAUSE ALL WENT TO THE OLDEST SON...)
