THE DAILY SHOW, June 21, 2011--In his recent debate with Chris Wallace of Fox News, Stewart said that "Fox News viewers are the most consistently misinformed media viewers."
On his show last night, Stewart changed his tune.
"As it turns out," he admitted, "I was misinformed. Which isn't so surprising since I watch a lot of Fox News."
Stewart explained: "Politifact, the non-partisan fact checking guys (and girls) thoroughly researched my statement and they found that in two of the surveys Fox News viewers scored the lowest and in other polls they were NEAR the bottom."
"Ultimately, Politifact declared my statement false."
"I defer to their judgement and apologize for my mistake. And if I were to continue to make these mistakes and not correct them that would undermine the very credibility and respectability that I work so hard to pretend to care about."
BUT...
"Has Politifact ever checked Fox for false statements?"
"Given that Fox News is the two-time defending champion as liar of the year according to Politifact, it's almost like they're a sports dynasty -- but of lying," says Jon Stewart.
On Tuesday night, Stewart ran through a long list of Fox claims that the non-partisan fact checker later declared to be false. That list included two fibs that Politifact rated as the "lie of the year" in 2009 and 2010.
"Fox News is like a lying dynasty," Stewart said. "They're like the New England Patriots of lying."
"Without the Patriots part, because we all know Patriots can't lie," he added.
