Jasmine Guy: A role model for African American female TALENT

Jasmine Guy, unlike Raven Symone, was a young black female talent that is beautiful, gifted, rich and married a black man and now has beautiful black children and gives back to her people.
Ms. Guy is best known for playing Whitley Gilbert, the memorably spoiled Southern belle in the comedy series A Different World, which ran on NBC from 1987 to 1993. Ms. Guy won six consecutive NAACP Image Awards for the role.

But Ms. Guy actually began her performing career as a dancer. Though born in Boston, she grew up in Atlanta, where her father, Rev. William Guy, was the pastor of the historic Friendship Baptist Church. Jasmine began taking ballet lessons at age 5 and, inspired by performers like the visiting Dance Theater of Harlem, she went on to study dance at Atlanta’s performing arts high school. At 17, she won a scholarship to join the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center in New York City, where she spent three years as a concert dancer.

Since completing her run as Whitley Gilbert, Ms. Guy has divided her time between stage and screen. She appeared with Halle Berry, Martin Sheen and Paul Winfield in the 1993 Alex Haley miniseries Queen and laterhad guest appearances on many series, including Melrose Place, NYPD Blue, andFresh Prince of Bel-Air. After marrying and giving birth to daughter Imani in 1999, she returned to the stage, winning acclaim for her portrayal of Velma Kelly in Bob Fosse’s Chicago in performances all across America. Back on television in 2003, she starred alongside Mandy Patinkin in Showtime’s two-year hit series Dead Like Me. She will reprise her role in a movie version due out in 2008.

In 2004, Ms. Guy published “Evolution of a Revolutionary,” an absorbing profile of Afeni Shakur, the mother of slain rap star Tupac Shakur. Ms. Guy is active in many charities, including A Place Called Home, a community safe house that offers food, security, sports, music and educational activities to more than 2,000 children in south central Los Angeles. Among the center’s offerings is a dance school, founded by Ms. Guy and now run by her sister Monica

It is obvious, Jasmine Guy's father played an important role in her life

jamal Abraham Thursday, July 7th 2011 at 11:51PM

Any African American FATHER would be proud to have a daughter like Jasmine Guy.....as for Raven Symone...if that was my daughter, I would be cursing to myself.

There is no break from my divine guidance, Irma....it is only your lack of understanding. The point the this blog is that there are positive role models for our young females, though few. But, the vast majority of the role models the devil sets up for our vulnerable young ladies ARE NO DAMN GOOD....LIKE RAVEN SYMONE. But, it takes a divine leader from almighty God to point these things out.....otherwise, you would not know.

I love Jasmine Guy!!!

There is no God buy Allah, He is the God of the righteous and the unrighteous, the God of the Muslim and the infidel, the God of the mosquito and the elephant, the God of the Hindu and the Buddhist, the God of the Monk and the Mormon....He is God...only the Muslim knows properly how to worship HIM. Just because Jasmine Guy is not a professed muslim, that does not mean that Allah will not bless her....He blesses whom He pleases....why...because He is almighty God.

Every episode of A differant World , Jasmine Guy was depicted in good taste....she was never filthy and vulgar or jumping in bed with men....she was a respectable lady.

Which of course is due to that strong Christian Father. Thank you Irma.

The Holy scriptures in the Bible used by the Christians are very powerful when properly understood. Again, there is only one God, despite the choice of Christians to worship a prophet of God.

Steve Williams Saturday, July 9th 2011 at 12:48PM

So the first part of your statement is why you praise a Christian, and the second part why you condemn a Christian. And you choose to praise or condemn as suits your purpose.

That's so rediculous....Jasmine Guy has respect for her "father". Her father as well as mother did a good job of parenting.

Steve Williams Saturday, July 9th 2011 at 6:44PM

So good parents come from a variety of theological beliefs?

jamal Abraham Saturday, July 9th 2011 at 8:44PM

@Steve....muslims to not have a patent on good parenting skills. It can come from differant theological backgrounds.

jamal Abraham Saturday, July 9th 2011 at 8:46PM

@Irma...no need to be disappointed that a black man, like Jasmine Guys, can be a good father. ITs OK to stick up for a brother "sometimes".

I was expecting you to compare and contrast Raven Simone with Jasmine Guy. Why didn't you?

jamal Abraham Saturday, July 16th 2011 at 10:47AM

Jasmine Guy stared in a successful sitcome
Raven Simone stared in a successful sitcome

Jasmine Guy is an attractive black woman

Jasmine Guy has made a lot of money

@Jamal am I misunderstanding as to you have succeded in getting rid of Farrakhan...you have successfully gotten teh money needed from as you put it your own self from the White man to build you nation??????????????????? (smile)

which means the same tactics you used to turn the public against Farrakhan hs worked so wellyou now use it on Raven???...and, this is where my misunderstanding comes in , Jamal as you do define your self as Father at times...

lol (smile) and again by little abe aka building of nations founding father... (smile)

ROBINSON IRMA Thursday, April 10th 2014 at 6:47PM

Jamal, are you saying it was me and not you giving all praise to the Christian minister for his child's success in this blog?!?

Me, I still belive each person is an individual not machines waiting for yours or any other of the White man's hand outs or any ones approval , premission to be able to be all they can be...(smile)

I doubt if Raven will be forced to declare bank rupt on her nation building or her followings of those faitful to her because of your put downs of her or Minister Farrakhan. lol as this is called life one either wins theSUCCESS battle of they loose it (smile)

ROBINSON IRMA Thursday, April 10th 2014 at 6:47PM

@Jamal, I am sure Christianity thanks you for taking this break from promotimg the 'distruction' of your God's designs on mankind to show the 'construction' of their God for mankind in the manner you just did in this blog. lol (smile)

ROBINSON IRMA Thursday, April 10th 2014 at 6:47PM

@Steve, it seem from the role model J.G. played on A Different World fits as more suited to be come one of Harry's nation's followers as I am sure Jamal is not going to allow his nation to be over run, by dingbats who refuses to clean up after themselves, because they are so "privliaged" ...

or lets see he does seem to have changed towards the values of the Christians who are not interested in seperations of nations , working for the White man being in America to find peace, contenment and safety...

that saying about SMALL WORLD. lol (smile)
