MITT ROMNEY TO HECKLER: "CORPORATIONS ARE PEOPLE, MY FRIEND." THIS IS WHAT HE'S RUNNING ON? REALLY??? (1789 hits)

HUFFINGTON POST, August 11, 2011 -- Speaking to an occasionally rowdy crowd two days before the Ames Straw poll, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney made what seems likely to become a much-discussed flub, declaring to a group of Iowans that "corporations are people."

Pressed by an attendee at the Iowa State Fair on Thursday as to why he was focusing on entitlement reforms as a means of deficit reduction over asking corporations to share part of the burden, the GOP frontrunner shot back:

"Corporations are people, my friend... of course they are. Everything corporations earn ultimately goes to the people. Where do you think it goes? Whose pockets? Whose pockets? People's pockets. Human beings my friend."

The comment was immediately pounced on by Democrats, who saw it as another example of Romney being uncomfortable on the stump and in-artful in his attempts to come off as an every-day pol.

"This is what Mitt Romney is going to run on? Corporations are people? Really?" said Democratic National Committee Communications Director Brad Woodhouse. "There's a great message for people struggling to get by and trying to make ends meet. Don't complain -- corporations are people too!"

Speaking at the Des Moines Register soapbox, Romney was also interrupted by a heckler who asked if if he supported "scrapping the Social Security payroll cap so that rich people pay their fair share into the trust fund?"

Romney responded, "There was a time in this country where we didn't celebrate attacking people based on their success. We didn't go after people because they were successful. I've watched this president go across the country attacking people, and I... and I am... if you want to speak, you can speak. But right now it's my turn, so let me continue."

The presidential contender went on to underscore his bottom line. "If you don't like my answer, you can vote for someone else," he said.

The situation that unfolded comes ahead of Thursday night's Republican presidential primary debate in the Hawkeye State. It also comes two days before the Ames Straw Poll, a test of conservative strength and table-setter for next year's Iowa caucuses set to take place on Saturday. While Romney will appear on the ballot, he is not actively campaigning to lock up support ahead of the event.

"As you know I participated in a major way in a straw poll four years ago," Romney said in addressing his decision to forego the straw poll during an appearance on Fox News' "Hannity" on Wednesday night. "Some of the benefit I already was able to accrue based upon what happened last time around... I want to use my financial resources and my time this time to actually get delegates, not the straw polls -- they are nice but don't get you delegates -- I'm not going to participate in the straw polls anywhere in the country."

Romney is right but what he stated was stated at the wrong time especially when there's mountains of debt and millions of Americans out of work. I don't buy that corporations are being unfairly demonized for making profits because they have outsourced a majority of the jobs years ago and are still making profits (although not as much as they would like right now) while people are having their means to an end cut. I'm still waiting to see when the wealthy tax cuts will be ended. Hmmmmmmmm...........

The idea that corporations are peole and have the same rights as people--such as freedom of speech--is nowhere established in law. The Supreme Court invented that concept in order to support it's citizens United decision.

But, there is no basis for it in reality, law, philosophy orany other discipline.

ONe easy and quick remedy--have both houses of Congress pass a one sentence law stating the principle that "corporations are not living human beings and do not have the same rights and privileges as living human beings."

If the Republicans want to argue against the principle and vote against it, let them defend their point to the American people.

@ Brother Rich,

I wasn't thinking of a corporation as a business but rather people who happen to work there. I guess that is my flub. Ha! Sorry....

A Jen Fad flub?

No way.

It was almost true and maybe if you look at it from a different angle it could be true if you changed a little detail or two.

But FLUB? No m'am.

Our Jen Fad doesn't do flubs!!!

Actually corporations are more like unions or a clan; not always united for the good of the people. However when people unite in a union, evidently they get the crap beat out of them by the governors of their state (EX: Wisconsin). Not trying to cause controversy. It's just a causal observation. Ooops! I meant casual. I need to learn how to type.

Thank you Treathyl for your astute observation.

You are absolutely correct. Corporations represent a union of common interests—a union of people, as Romney says. But, where he goes off base, is when he tries to claim they are people with broad concerns, like the American people.

The Corporation Personhood doctrine was adopted back in the 1870’s when the railroad companies, the Exxon-Mobil or their time, wanted legal protection so they could gain economic advantages.

There is no reason, legal or otherwise, why corporations should have freedom of speech since they represent only the collective union of people as you pointed out—and some of them might disagree with the corporate position. But these corporations are NOT individual people.

Those corporations have many legal protections that individual people don’t. And they can’t vote.
