Coming off a record summer enrollment of over 1,900 students, Alcorn kicked off its new academic year by welcoming a record breaking freshman class of more than 1,500 students and 495 transfer students. “Alcorn is working hard to meet the standards set by our new president,” says Executive Vice President and Provost for Academic Affairs Samuel L. White. “Our summer enrollment growth was great, but the president reminds us regularly that we missed our 2,000 student summer enrollment goal.”
Overall fall headcount reached 4,391 registered students, exceeding the 4,100 target, the highest total in the University’s 140-year history. International students enrollment also increased with more than 16 countries represented. Students have made the journey to Lorman, Mississippi, from as far away as California on the west coast and New York on the east coast, 32 states are represented in the student population. In fact, this year’s Freshman Class President Booker Reid is from Las Vegas, Nevada, and the Student Government Association President Brandon Christopher Rook is from Broomall, Pennsylvania.
“Alcorn is a great institution and provides an exceptional, affordable education,” says President M. Christopher Brown II. “Perspective students and their families believe in the value of an Alcorn education. It is gratifying to know that we have diverse, high achieving students choosing Alcorn for their academic pursuits. We still have miles to go before we sleep.”
More students are living on campus with student housing at capacity even with the opening of the new Medgar Wiley Evers Heritage Village, which houses 1002 students. “Alcorn’s overall enrollment management target is 5100 students in 2013, this will allow the University to utilize its land mass and facilities while maximizing our commitment to the state,” says Emanuel Barnes, director of Admissions. “In fall of 2012, the new campus enrollment plan request that we enroll 4,600 students.”
President Brown added that no one individual or department is responsible for the enrollment growth, “The Alcorn community, especially our students and alumni, attributed to the fall enrollment success this speaks to our committed leadership across campus, concise goals, and persistent efforts by all.”
The top majors declared by the incoming class are business, agriculture, education and science. Provost White cautions us, “Alcorn’s aggressive enrollment plan requires us to closely monitor instructional loads and faculty needs in all academic majors.”
