What's a UARS?
That stands for Upper Atmosphere Research Satelite. This is the same satelite that's been in orbit for about 20 years. The satelite was launched by NASA in 1991 as part of the scientific mission to study the ozone layers and earth's and space atmosphere. However, after UARS finished it's mission NASA discontinued the remaining fuel and awaited it's day to return to the earth's surface. Scientists indicate that most of its debris will burn up in re-entry but there may be at least 26 pieces that will survive and drop down somewhere? Somewhere? Tracking of the debris is being watched and the exact locations may be a mystery in the meantime. Estimated chances you'll get hit by any pieces are 1 in 3,200. If you happen to catch a piece of UARS it's best to turn it in... the property is & still belongs to NASA! Lookout for the return UARS on Friday, September 23rd, 2011. Somewhere...
