Most poets look forward to being recognized in displaying their work as works of a genuis and any honor given to poets most times have a long and anticipated wait. Poets write, express, change views and even are artists of words. When there is some recognition poets are duly appreciated of the observations. So it is great to annouce an American poet receiving such a wonderful grant for her writing.
On Tuesday, September 20, The John and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation named 22 fellows to receive Genius awards which come with no strings attached prize totaling $500,00 over five years. American poet Kay Ryan an American was named as one of the 22 new MacArthur fellows. Ryan also received the highly pestigious Pulitzer Prize earlier this year. The modest American said that she was raised..."glamor-free, ocean free, hot, stinky, oil rich, potato rich." in San Joaquin Valley of California. The poet said she didn't want to be a poet but found poetry was nonetheless possessing her mind. Ryan writes about everyday human emotion such as hope, doubt and fear.
The preception of this blog is one way I'm continuing to encourage poets who are Black to keep forging with words of their emotions, struggles, faith and everyday living Black in America. I also encourage myself as a poetess to never give up. Although Ryan is White I know there is room still for Black poets and authors to find rewards and recognition in the society of the Arts.
This is an excerpt from Ryan's poem
KILLING TIME
Time is rubbery.
If you hide it
in the shrubbery
it will wait
will winter and
was back out
with the rainwater.
You will find it
on your steps agin
like the newspaper.
Time compresses.
Stuff it in the
couch corner and
it will spring out
some night or other
when you have guests.
One of whom guesses
Time stretches.
Then it snaps back
leaving bare pathes
that didn't happen.
Abandoned time hardens
like hidden gun.
People feel around.
Sooner or later
it will be found.
