DISAPPEARED INTO THIN AIR: THOUSANDS OF HISPANIC STUDENTS LEAVE SCHOOL AFTER ALABAMA TOUGH IMMIGRATION LAW (2295 hits)

HUFFINGTON POST, September 30, 2011 -- Hispanic students have started vanishing from Alabama public schools in the wake of a court ruling that upheld the state's tough new law cracking down on illegal immigration.

Education officials say scores of immigrant families have withdrawn their children from classes or kept them home this week, afraid that sending the kids to school would draw attention from authorities.

There are no precise statewide numbers. But several districts with large immigrant enrollments – from small towns to large urban districts – reported a sudden exodus of children of Hispanic parents, some of whom told officials they planned to leave the state to avoid trouble with the law, which requires schools to check students' immigration status.

The anxiety has become so intense that the superintendent in one of the state's largest cities, Huntsville, went on a Spanish-language television show Thursday to try to calm widespread worries.

"In the case of this law, our students do not have anything to fear," Casey Wardynski said in halting Spanish. He urged families to send students to class and explained that the state is only trying to compile statistics.

Police, he insisted, were not getting involved in schools.

Victor Palafox graduated from a high school in suburban Birmingham last year and has lived in the United States without documentation since age 6, when his parents brought him and his brother here from Mexico.

"Younger students are watching their lives taken from their hands," said Palafox, whose family is staying put.

In Montgomery County, more than 200 Hispanic students were absent the morning after the judge's Wednesday ruling. A handful withdrew.

In tiny Albertville, 35 students withdrew in one day. And about 20 students in Shelby County, in suburban Birmingham, either withdrew or told teachers they were leaving.

Local and state officials are pleading with immigrant families to keep their children enrolled. The law does not ban anyone from school, they say, and neither students nor parents will be arrested for trying to get an education.

But many Spanish-speaking families aren't waiting around to see what happens.

A school worker in Albertville – a community with a large poultry industry that employs many Hispanic workers – said Friday that many families might leave town over the weekend for other states. About 22 percent of the community's 4,200 students are Hispanic.

"I met a Hispanic mother in the hallway at our community learning center this morning, where enrollment and withdrawal happens. She looked at me with tears in her eyes. I asked, `Are you leaving?' She said `Yes,' and hugged me, crying," said the worker, who spoke on condition of anonymity because she was not an authorized spokeswoman.

In Russellville, which has one of the largest immigrant populations in the state because of its poultry plants, overall school attendance was down more than 2 percent after the ruling, and the rate was higher among Hispanic students.

There's "no firm data yet, but several students have related to their teachers that they may be moving soon," said George Harper, who works in the central office.

Schools in Baldwin County, a heavily agricultural and tourist area near the Gulf Coast, and in Decatur in the Tennessee Valley also reported sudden decreases in Hispanic attendance.

The law does not require proof of citizenship to enroll, and it does not apply to any students who were enrolled before Sept. 1. While most students are not affected, school systems are supposed to begin checking the status of first-time enrollees now.

The Obama administration filed court documents Friday announcing its plans to appeal the ruling that upheld the law.

The state has distributed to schools sample letters that can be sent to parents of new students informing them of the law's requirements for either citizenship documents or sworn statements by parents.

In an attempt to ease suspicions that the law may lead to arrests, the letter tells parents immigration information will be used only to gather statistics.

"Rest assured," the letter states, "that it will not be a problem if you are unable or unwilling to provide either of the documents."

Depriving thousands of young people--an entire generation--of an education and an opportunity to contribute to society--exactly how does this make our nation stronger?

I hate to see children harmed. But at the same time, our cities and states are drained financially we can't afford to educate non citizens. If we don't do something now---when?

Richard...I find this really hard to swallow. Immigration laws like this one in Alabama makes you think they were actually trying to elimate a race of people. "A legal way apply secured genocidal " What laws are next? Is this the next generation of government in the US? It is troubling.

Hello to All,

Let me ask this question to the pros and cons of Black Americans.

Supposing Black Americans were a sovereign people in our own country and our country was from the borders of North and South Carolina to the Canadian border and from the Mississippi River to the East Coast and Black Americans had this same immigration problems as White America presently have now how should we handle it?

For instance, why would Ms. Shield feel that Alabama's immigration law is trying to eliminate a race of people when Mexicans are a sovereign people and have their own country, Mexico?

Firstly, we know that Mexicans whether they are legal or not legal citizens of White America they are sovereign people because they have a country of their own, am I right.
Now, if the Mexicans would concentrate and spend then natural resources (brainpower) developing their own country and at the same time they would be developing a better life for themselves as White America has done in the past 200 years then what the Mexicans want from White America they would see that their solution lies within their own hands. The Mexicans just don't have confidence in themselves. Am I making any sense?

In other words, are the schools in White America better than the schools in Mexico? If the schools in Mexico are inferior to the schools in White America then who is at fault? Is it the Mexican government at fault? Or, is it the responsibility of White America to pick up the slack of Mexico?

I could be wrong but I do not want to make that call on myself until I get some feedback. Perhaps one of you all out there might trump what I say. So, let us see what happens, okay. Remember, that I am not that smart. I have an IQ of 68. I am just barely passed the threshold of retardation. Anyway, let us see if any of you all out there can trump me, okay.

Dorothy--I hear your point about using our dwindling resources wisely and to prioritize American citizens first.

But it is important to think about the consequences of barring non-citizens from schools. The issue is--what will become of them? Education is an investment in the future. That child whose parents brought him here illiegally as a toddler can grow up to become a doctor, scientists or teacher, businessman, homeowner and taxpayer.

That same child, deprived of an education, will certainly become an additional financial burden to taxpayes. Ignorance, crime, medical care for an impoverished underclass...the results are no good for anyone.

Education is the way out.

No child should be deprived of an educaiton for any reason.

In New Orleans the student population consists of 50% Black and 40% Hispanic. I also live in an area which consists of Black and Hispanic neighbors, and we all get along just fine. I think it is unfair that these Hispanic students in Alabama are being forced to leave school until they can provide legal documentation, I feel that these schools in Alabama should not punish these children. The Hispanic students have just as much right to receive an education as we do.

When you really think about it, all this talk about Hispanics, Latinos and immigration laws did not become popular until people started questioning whether our President Obama was a U.S. citizen or not and demanded him to show his birth certificate...

With that said, I think the immigration law should be STOPPED altogether.

Siebra--I agree totally.

When you see in real life how this kind of discriminatory law negatively impacts people, it does not look so good.

Rich, I am sure you have heard the expression, "Look before you leap"? LOL

Now how much more do you think these chickens will cost per lb. after this??? Plus, Illegals do pay local, state and federal taxes...the schools will loose about how much money per day, schools must be closed, teachers laid off, ect. and for what, to satisfy whose being benefited by any of this even those who made these laws?!

Because no man works alone but with others, they will all be loosers, because they are in this state citizens are all in the same economic basket where every thing is related to the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$...and products being delivered to the buyers is what our economy is based on????????????? so this main industry that seems to be in this area may even be forced to close now along with the schools??????!!!!!!!!!!? "Look before you leap"!!!!!!...

@Rich, "I" put tis info here because of the belief that all children are innocent and should not have to suffer from any kinds of unnecessary abuse due to greed and ignorance or prejudices, I will put something Martin Bashir talked bout on his program today...

Bashir said he was introducing the newest mamber of the semase street children's program family...and that this new member represented not someone from an African nation the % of children going to bed hungry each and every night, but children right here in America going to bed hungry...He then went on to plead with the speaker of the house and the highest rancking members of the Republicans in the House taht on sunday they forgo watcing the FOX news networks or attening any mettings with their big campaign downers and watch the special Sunday from sesme Street that relates to children suffering from hunger as a result of their laws they have and are making...

It was touching and I thought of your latest postings on these innocent children's plites just trying to survive these hate filled laws and their law makeers of these laws as a social need, requirment or moral right. (NUP)
