CUPERTINO, Calif.-- Police shot and killed Shareef Allman on Thursday, the man suspected of the northern California workplace shooting rampage a day earlier that left three dead and seven injured, KNTV reported.
The Santa Clara County sheriff's office said multiple shots had been fired and the suspect was killed shortly after they resumed the manhunt for Allman Thursday. An "officer assist" call went out at 7:41am local time, KNTV said.
The sheriff's office said the suspect was killed near the 900 block of Lorne Way in Santa Clara, Calif., according to the station.
The shooting brought an end to a massive overnight manhunt that had been underway for Allman, who had been on the loose since Wednesday morning after he opened fire at the Lehigh Southwest Permanente Cement Plant in Santa Clara County, killing three people and injuring seven.
Authorities had encouraged residents in the area surrounding the company to lock their doors, calling Allman "armed and extremely dangerous."
Police had described Allman, 47, as an African-American male who is about 5-foot-11 and weighs 215 pounds.
Law enforcement officials said Allman initially became upset during a 4:15am Wednesday safety meeting with 15 other workers at the rock quarry and cement company. He left the meeting and returned with a handgun and an assault rifle and began shooting his co-workers. Authorities said the incident lasted less than two minutes.
Authorities said the three dead Lehigh employees were Mark Munoz, 59, John Vallejos, 51, and Manuel Pinon, 48.
Allman also allegedly shot a woman as he attempted to carjack her vehicle at the nearby Hewlett-Packard campus several hours after the initial shooting.
Allman's carjacking attempt failed and he fled on foot into a nearby neighborhood. The car-jacking victim was expected to recover from her injuries.
Heavily-armed law enforcement officials dressed in full body armor had been sweeping neighborhoods bordering Sunnyvale and Cupertino, Calif., about 45 miles (72km) southeast of San Francisco, for twelve hours Wednesday in the search for Allman. The Santa Clara County sheriff's office announced at 7:00pm the manhunt was wrapping up for the night but would resume at daybreak, KNTV reported.
According to the San Jose Mercury News, Allman was a haul truck driver at the Lehigh plant and a member of the Teamsters Union. His neighbor told the paper that Allman had been upset about a recent move to the night shift from the day shift, complaining that it interfered with his time with his daughter.
Allman has a minor criminal record for crimes such as forgery and driving with a suspended license. His last conviction was in 1994 and he served a small amount of jail time for the forgery offense.
He was also a producer on a public access television show called "Real 2 Real" in San Jose, Calif., and has conducted an interview with Jesse Jackson.
