Dr. Sylvester Oliver Chosen As Mississippi Humanities Council Faculty of the Year (8390 hits)


Rust College associate professor of music, Dr. Sylvester Oliver, Jr. has been named as the 2011 Mississippi Humanities Teacher of the Year for Rust College. He was elected by the Humanities Council, who chooses one faculty member at each higher education institution in the state. He was chosen based on his outstanding accomplishments and contributions to Rust College.

Dr. Oliver will give a speech on "Ida B. Wells Digital Research Project: Its Importance in a Digital Age.” He will deliver his presentation at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 2, 2011 in Heard Auditorium of the McCarty-Varnell B.C.S. Building on the campus of Rust College. A reception and refreshments will follow.

“In this talk, I will discuss Ida B. Wells and her legacy as native of Holly Springs and how the project is designed to collect text and images on African-Americans in North Mississippi,” says Dr. Oliver. He says he will discuss the goals of this project as funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities in Washington, D.C. as a two-year project. He will share where the project is presently and how a digital repository and website is being developed as part of the research project.

Dr. Oliver, Chair of the Division of Humanities and is an avid researcher on African-American history and music in Mississippi. He is the author of Hidden Chronicles and numerous articles on African-American history in Marshall County, Mississippi. He is currently finishing a history on African Americans in Holly Springs and Marshall County as part of a historical series.

Rust College is a historically black, co-educational, senior liberal arts college founded in 1866 by the Freedman’s Aid Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The College is related to the United Methodist Church, and is dedicated to serving students with a variety of academic preparations, through instruction in the humanities, social and behavioral sciences, natural science, business, technology, and education. Rust College provides an opportunity for education to all, regardless of race, religion, s*x, national origin, or ethnic background.
