Authors of the newly released The Truth About Being Single, Lakeisha Rivers Ekeigwe and Neva Lockhart say that black women are being told to lower their standards if they want to marry an African-American man.
"The plight of the black man has been put on the shoulders of the black woman," Ekeigwe told theGrio.
"Black women are told to look for a black brother and pull him up because he may not be in your socioeconomic bracket or have the same education."
Lockhart said, this was certainly the case, as she observed growing up in the '70s when black women were pressured to marry their "baby daddies."
"A lot of black women settled that way," she said.
Nonetheless, the authors agree that the unmarried black woman is no different from the unmarried white woman. They assert that the "pain, loneliness and fear" of unmarried women around the world are the same.

That's why the authors wrote the book- to tell unmarried women around the world that it is perfectly OK to want to be married. After interviewing about 300 women and following reports in the media, the authors were convinced that society is forcing women to feel that marriage is no big deal and that unmarried women should accept their pre-destined fate of single-hood.
Lockhart, a businesswoman, counselor and therapist, is still waiting for marriage. She says she is a true believer in love and women, including black women, should never settle.
"If I get married at 70, I'm gonna walk down the aisle at 70."
As African-American women over the age of 45, Lockhart and Ekeigwe know all too well that unmarried black women have been singled out by the media. They say the image of the African-American woman who is proud of being unmarried and facing difficulty with finding a life partner perpetuates an unfair racial stereotype that is far from reality.
"The truth is we [black people] didn't invent Match.com and Eharmony.com!" Ekeigwe said.

Furthermore, the book confronts "lies" from experts and scholars telling women that their innate desire to be married is wrong and stems from low self-esteem. For years, the likes of comedian and The View co-host, Joy Behar and feminist icon, Gloria Steinem, shared their views that marriage is not so important. The feminist slogan, popularized by Steinem, that says "a woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle," embodies the idea of women independence.
But, surprise was no stranger when the public learned that Behar had married her boyfriend of 29 years this year and Steinem, who once dissed marriage as an institution that destroys relationships, finally married at age 66 in 2000.
"We are biologically wired to not be single. That's why being single doesn't feel good," Ekeigwe said.
"Throughout life, women are preparing to menstruate, menstruating or recovering from menstruating and menstruating enables you to mate and produce a child and you need a male to do that."
And while the book represents unmarried women of various backgrounds in their 40s and beyond, Lockhart and Ekeigwe say they hold a particular place in their hearts for African-American women.

I can understand why you agree with Lockhart because you are following closely in her footstep... to be a dried up prune.
Getting a man before one is 70 years of age is not having standards but just plain Stupidity. Afterall, it's not difficult to find a good man if you think about it. There are many good men in the world.
I'm glad Janelle decided to hook up with you with all her standards before she was 70yrs old. Heck if you can't get a man at 29 or 30 what makes a person think her chances are better at 70? That's foolishness!
With all due respect, I am not following in Ms. Lockhart's footsteps at all...unlike a lot of other people Ms. Lockhart and I am not the type of person to rush into marriage and/or get with society's theory that I should be married.
I know how to play Lady Seduction when I want to, however I tend to take things slow and get to really know a person before making a decision to settle down with them. That in itself is not stupidity at all dear sister...it's using plain COMMON SENSE!!!

Let me explain the chemistry that is floating through all of you. It is a chemistry of extreme ignorance and stupidity. It is an irrational chemistry that drives us apart rather than pulls us together. Black Americans just like the children of Israel are not an intelligent people.

If you all could possibly see yourselves as one people (Black Americans) it would help you all to rationally move away from trying to be other people by believing in their personal scriptures from God and experiences to desire to have your own scriptures and experiences to tell the world. What would settle the argument between the both of you is that both of you must acknowledge and start from fact #-1 that prophets are racially different. There is lots of intelligence that comes out of the fact that prophets are racially different.

@Kim, you were not on the site and since Jen may have forgotten even writting on the site about she knows nothing about her husband, like what nationality he is...but she as she says here it is all about the marriage(and divorce is not allowed evan in the Catholic religion (well if you are poor, ect.)

@Jake, please are you saying that you are the first one to come up with the part about marrying for the reaons you give for your decission to marry...making a verbal vow to the one you marry???...that you will not be having a marrage liscense provided by man as your state saying you are legally married...

JUST WONDERING BECAUSE AS A CATHOLIC I DID THIS...AS A BUDDHIST, I DID THIS...AT THE WEDDING OF MY MORMON FRIEND A FEW WEEKS BACK THEY DID THIS AND FOR THE SAME REASONS AS JUST STATED BY YOU JAKE IS ONLY WHY i ASK THIS...NOT JUST OF YOU BUT OF ANYONE ELSE WHO DID MARRIEGE FOR NOT THESE REASONS...OOPS AND EVEN THOUGH I WENT TO A SEDDING IN JAIL MANY YEAR SBACK OF A COUPLE WH HAD BEEN TOGATHER FOR YEARS AN D HAD THREE CHILDREN AND THEY ONLY AND THEY DID ADMIT THEY WOULD NOT BE GETTING MARRIED IF HE WAS NOT GOING OFF TO PRISON FOR 5 YEARS SO THEY MUST GET MARRIED IF THEY WANTED TO STILL FUNCTION AS A FAMILY AS THEY HAD ALL THESE YEARS. It is so funny that people say marriage shoud only be after marriage...and you should be married if you have children by taht person...

We live In a world where promiscuity, STDs, and unwanted pregnancies are on the rise, and I think it's wonderful that Sister Lockhart is being open about her decision. I think anyone who holds their body and their futures in this high regard should be applauded. waited a pretty long time myself before getting married, that was my personal choice and it had nothing to do with religious beliefs. I believe in saving yourself for the right person, a man that you can trust and not just have s*x with whatever man looks your way. There's nothing wrong with being picky, your body is a temple and should be treated like a temple, your body is a gift from God, you don't just let anyone touch it.
