Honorable Judge Glenda Hatchett to keynote 2012 Heritage Convocation at Alcorn (1131 hits)

Alcorn will honor its legacy as a land-grant institution and the accomplishments of various descendants in this country and from countries around the world at its 2012 Heritage Convocation in the historic Oakland Memorial Chapel at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 7.

The Honorable Judge Glenda Hatchett, of the two-time Emmy nominated nationally syndicated TV show “Judge Hatchett” and member of the National Football League’s Atlanta Falcons’ Board of Advisors, will deliver the convocation address.

Committed to community development, Judge Hatchett serves on various nonprofit boards including the National Board of Governors of the Boys and Girls Club of America, the Board of Advisors for Play Pumps International, the Leadership Circle for the After School Alliance and the Advisory Board for the Women’s Resource Center at Spelman College. She also serves as the national spokesperson for Court Appointed Special Advocates, a non-profit volunteer organization that trains volunteers to represent abused and neglected children.

Hatchett is the founder and CEO of Great Day Productions, the newly established production company that specializes in television programming. She has been a legal contributor on national news outlets including CNN, FOX News and The Today Show, and is the author of the national best sellers “Say What You Mean and Mean What You Say” and “Dare to Take Charge”. She is the recipient of numerous awards including the Roscoe Pound Award for outstanding work in Criminal Justice, the NAACP’s Thurgood Marshall Award, and The President’s Award.

Alcorn President M. Christopher Brown II will preside over the convocation. “We cherish the 141-year old history of Alcorn as the oldest public historically black land-grant institution in the United States,” says President Brown. “We remember our heroes and ordinary Alcornites whose efforts and selfless dedication “against great odds” helped make our beloved University an educational and cultural beacon of the nation.”

During the Convocation, several Heritage Awards will be presented, including the Academic Heritage Award, the Agricultural Heritage Award, the Athletic Heritage Award, and the Access Heritage Award.

Also, at the Convocation, civil rights activist Myrlie Evers, who will serve as a Distinguished Scholar-in-Residence at Alcorn, will be formally introduced to the University community. The Convocation is free and open to the public.
