ON THE WINGS OF THE WIND: The Untold Story of History’s First Flight. By Richard Kigel (Part 9) (511 hits)

AND HE RODE UPON A CHERUB AND DID FLY; YEA, HE DID FLY UPON THE WINGS OF THE WIND—PSALM 18:10

SOMEWHERE OVER VIRGINIA, 1857 -- A violent rush of wind battered us from all sides. It felt like we were falling. I reached across the bodies of the two young ones to hold them in place, gripping the wood frame with my other hand so fiercely my fingers cramped.

We didn’t know what was happening and nobody wanted to look. We pressed our faces into the soft cloth bed, screaming our lungs out, bracing for a long fall to the rocks below.

Although we were yelling at the top of our voices, I could barely hear it in the ruckus with the swirling propeller, the whistling steam, clanking
rods and grinding gears. Any moment I expected it would be all over. A horrific high speed crash would blow us to kingdom come.

My eyes were squeezed tight and all I could do was pray the Our Father, just as Auntie Bee taught me. I got through the whole prayer amazed to be alive. When nothing happened, I wasn’t sure what to do so I started again, bellowing out each word as loud as I could: “Our Father, Who art in Heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name…”

We were falling, falling, falling…for an awfully long time. It dawned on me that if we were going to hit bottom, it should have happened already. I got the courage to open one eye. In the early morning light I saw that we were now a good distance away from the mountain. But, somehow, we were no lower than we were before. Amazingly, we never went down.

I opened both eyes. All around us there was nothing but air. We weren’t falling. We were flying.

I could barely see the two faceless figures waving at us from the edge of the cliff. They seemed so small in the distance. We were moving steadily away from them.

“Auntie Bee!! Auntie Bee!!” Randall stood up, his arms stretched out in a futile effort to touch her.

“Auntie Bee!!” His plaintive cry echoed in the dark.

READER REVIEW: ON THE WINGS OF THE WIND was my summer read. The depiction of slavery and the whippings just cut me to the core of my soul. The visuals were clear and strong. It truly placed me at scene that became surreal for me. I felt the back lashes. I felt their skin tear open, and I felt their wounds. Periodically I felt waves of emotions.
