Teachers in the CTU [Chicago Teachers Union] have voiced their opposition of planned school closures claiming that such closures of the schools would disconnect them from servicing community school students, and families. The teachers indicated that their opposed to what the closures would do to the neighborhood students. Teachers rallied on Saturday, in a forum conducted with the Rainbow PUSH Coaliation speaking up of the disadvantages of closing schools where students have connected with faculity and other students in the same areas. CTU President, Karen Lewis quoted in a local Chicago News coverage regarding a conversation with Chicago's Mayor Rahm Emanuel who has championed CPS changes stated he said" ..that "25% of the students in this city are never going to be anything, never going to amount to anything and he was never going to throw money at them." . However, the mayor denies ever having the conversation. Mayor Emanuel has proposed in local media reports that he is for extending a longer school day iand the closing of low-performaning schools. Teachers are calling that a polictical move to gain favor and no one aimed at the educating and commitment to improve student standard learning abilities. Mayor Emanuel along with CPS Chief Jean Claude Brizard will travel to Washington on Friday, March 02, 2012 to discuss closures advantages of closures and turnarounds to best decide what are the best directions to continue with an education panel at the American University. At least 10 schools are planned to closed.
