Alcorn to hold its first annual Unity Through Diversity Week (726 hits)

Alcorn State University will host its first annual Unity Through Diversity Week, April 16-20. The week is designed to bring the campus and community together for a series of dynamic educational events to celebrate diversity and inclusion.

The opening keynote speaker will be Dr. John Carlos, an educator, author, and activist best known for his Black Power salute at the 1968 Olympics on the podium as the Bronze medal winner.

Other special activities include panels on religious diversity and "women's firsts in Mississippi", wellness walk and talk, a male success town hall meeting, salsa dancing, a diversity art exhibit, a multicultural parade and festival, an interactive performance experience addressing mental health issues, a diversity awards luncheon, and speakers to include civil rights legend Myrlie Evers and nationally recognized cultural expert Pegine Echevarria.

"This exciting week will affirm Alcorn's commitment to diversity and equity, provide powerful and enjoyable experiences for the campus community to grow together in cultural competence, and help prepare our students to be champions for diversity in their future professional endeavors in a global society," shared Dr. Derek Greenfield, director of Diversity and Equity Engagement.

The week is sponsored by the Office of Diversity and Equity Engagement with financing from The Phil Hardin Foundation.

All events are free and open to the public.
