Hempstead, New York - On Saturday, April 21, 2012, students from the ABGS Middle School in Hempstead won the 100 Black Men of Long Island's 16th Annual African-American Academic History Challenge. It was the second consecutive yearthat the school has been victorious in the contest. Jason Adam Williams (grade seven) and Jose Guerra-Lopez (grade six) defeated Longwood Middle School in a nail-biter during the championship round of the competition by answering the final question correctly in the jeopardy style contest. The event was held at the Wyandanch Public Library and sponsored by the State Farm Insurance Company.

Jason who plans to become a detective and Jose who aspires to become a computer engineer will be awarded $500 in scholarships for college and expenses. They also earned an all expenses paid trip toAtlanta, Georgia in June, and will be chaperoned by their coach and academic advisor, Mr. Khayyam E. Ali (yours truly). While there, they will compete in the national championship to be held at the 100 Black Men of America's National Education Conference. Additional college scholarships and prizes will be up for grabs in Atlanta.

The annual affair is one of the many ways that 100 Black Men of Long Island advances its efforts to mentor youth. President Phil Andrews said, " The 100 Black Men of Long Island, Inc.'s annual African-American Academic History Challenge (History Bowl) enriches the lives of students who participate in the jeopardy style competition and provides future scholarship dollars for winners. The bowl is part of our mission to provide substantial mentoring activities in the Long Island region across diverse communities."

The event was moderated by Mike Stevens, television host of "Heroes on the Island" which is shown regularly on Verizon's FiOS 1.

Jason and Jose, both honor students, would like to thank their Alverta B. Gray Shultz (ABGS) Middle School principal, Mr. Hank Williams, for his ongoing support of this endeavor and for providing the time and facilities for the students to accomplish this extraordinary achievement.
