Lincoln Center Out of Doors Festival 2012 Schedule With Valerie Simpson And Others (493 hits)

Posted on May 25, 2012
Harlem World

Lincoln Center Out of Doors which runs from July 25 to August 12 will feature 100 free performances across the plazas of Lincoln Center. Seventeen premieres and debuts highlight the three weeks of this latest edition of one of the country’s longest-running, free, outdoor festivals. Additional artists and programs have been added to the schedule. A new chronological listing of performances follows, or visit: www.LCOutofDoors.org

Valerie Simpson, half of the legendary songwriter/producer/performer team Ashford & Simpson, will lead Valerie Simpson and Friends: Tribute to Nick Ashford in Damrosch Park on August 10. The beloved duo responsible for “ “Ain’t Nothing Like The Real Thing,” “Reach Out and Touch (Somebody’s Hand),” “I’m Every Woman,” “Let’s Go Get Stoned,” “Solid (As a Rock)” and other era-defining tunes, also wrote and/or produced hits for a “Who’s Who” of music stars including Marvin Gaye, Tammi Terrell, Ray Charles, Diana Ross, Whitney Houston, and Chaka Khan. Their concert debut as a duo took place at Lincoln Center 40 years ago as part of the groundbreaking “Soul at the Center” festival. On the heels of her just-released solo album, Dinosaurs Are Coming Back Again (a project she and Ashford had worked on for a number of years), Simpson salutes her work- and life-partner who died last year, alongside a line-up of artists associated with the Sugar Bar, the Upper West Side hot spot owned by the couple.

Opening on July 25, continuing throughout Out of Doors, and punctuated by a live 60-piece percussion performance featuring the Talujon Percussion Group on August 3, is the world premiere of the Lincoln Center commission, Phil Kline’s dreamcitynine in honor of John Cage’s Centennial anniversary. Kline’s newest work was inspired by Cage’s one-minute stories from Indeterminacy. He takes the concept a step further with this work that uses a downloadable GPS-based app. As users walk the Lincoln Center campus, the app will randomly “trigger” the 60 new, original, one-minute texts written by contributors from the world of music, art and ideas. Joining previously announced contributors, filmmaker Jim Jarmusch, historian Luc Sante, American novelist/playwright Darryl Pinckney, composers Philip Glass, Julia Wolfe, Elliott Sharp, and David T. Little, musicians Theo Bleckmann, Nadia Sirota, and Mary Rowell, and radio personality John Schaefer, are choreographer Bill T. Jones, composer Meredith Monk, musician Nona Hendryx, and actor, activist, poet and spoken-word artist Caridad de La Luz (La Bruja).

Two great musical artists, powerhouse Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Melissa Manchester and theater/cabaret singer Kate Ferber (One Child Born: The Music of Laura Nyro) have just been added to the roster of performers taking part in The Triple Goddess Twilight Revue – Celebrating The Music of Laura Nyro, on August 11, part of this year’s “Roots of American Music” series at Out of Doors. They join Nona Hendryx and Sarah Dash of Labelle (collaborators on the 1971 album Gonna Take a Miracle), a rare reunion of Desmond Child & Rouge, and others, who will pay tribute to this distinctive American artist whose unconventional style embraced r&b, gospel, jazz, and Brill Building pop with piano-driven songs that broke new ground. The band will include drummer Bernard “Pretty” Purdie, who was featured on Nyro’s final studio recording Walk the Dog and Light the Light, and Screen Gems songwriter and vocalist Toni Wine, featured in Out of Doors’ 2011 Girl Group’s celebration “She’s Got the Power.”

Memphis-born singer/songwriter William Bell was one of the architects of the Stax-Volt sound, writing, co-writing, and performing a series of songs from the early ‘60s on including “You Don’t Miss Your Water,” and his 1966 R&B hit, “Share What You Got (But Keep What You Need).” He also wrote the oft-covered blues classic “Born Under a Bad Sign.” His career has included collaborations with Booker T. Jones, Judy Clay, and Chuck Jackson, among others. Bill joins Dan Penn and Teenie Rogers for “Roots of American Music’s” Soulful Songwriters Circle for an insightful, round-robin discussion-performance session on August 12.

As part of “Roots of American Music,” on the evening of August 11, Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls All-stars: Sister Songwriters, a multi-generational super group including current students, recent grads, and teaching artists from the renowned music and mentoring program, will play songs by influential female artists of color, including Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton, Nina Simone, Aretha Franklin. Leading the group is Willie Mae founding member, drummer/composer LaFrae Sci. Sci, also a member of Burnt Sugar The Arkestra Chamber, is on the faculty of the Middle School Jazz Academy at Jazz at Lincoln Center. She has recorded and toured with a range of jazz, blues, pop, rock and hip-hop artists including Kelis, Dr. Lonnie Smith, David “Fathead” Newman, Cyndi Lauper, Irene Cara and Melvin Van Peebles’ Laxative.

Pioneering jazz-rock guitarist Larry Coryell is the new addition to GLOBAL FUSION, Dr. L. Subramaniam’s concert on August 8. Coryell, a member of Chico Hamilton’s band in the late 1960s, worked with Gary Burton and Herbie Mann (on his Memphis Underground album) and in the early 70s co-founded the jazz-rock band Eleventh House. As an acoustic guitarist he has worked with a wide-range of artists and projects ranging from jazz and blues, to world and classical music. Classical Indian Carnatic violin master Subramaniam is also joined by his wife, celebrated singer and Bollywood star, Kavita Krishnamurthi Subramaniam, American blues harmonica master and blues composer/pianist Corky Siegel, and Bindu Subramaniam and Ambi Subramaniam.

A new addition to “Heritage Sunday’s” (August 5) Ayiti Rasanble! line-up is Afro-Haitian dance troupe Feet of Rhythm. Founded in 1994 and led by Artistic Director, dancer and teacher Nadia Dieudonne, the folkloric dance company’s mission is to preserve and promote the rich culture of Haiti. The group has appeared the Brooklyn Museum, Summerstage, Dance Theater Workshop and international festivals in Canada and Japan. Feet of Rhythm join previously announced Kongo featuring renowned dancer Peniel Guerrier, Le Troupe Makandal, and Raram. Ayiti Rasanble! is co-presented with long-time Out of Doors collaborating partner, the Center for Traditional Music and Dance.

Tangle, a project of Australia’s Polyglot Theatre that has its U.S. premiere on July 26, is a huge, fun, interactive event that is part mass visual arts installation, part performance, part playground, and part dance party. To live music, children and family members create a giant installation by weaving colored elastic through 25 poles of different heights set on a large platform base. Weavers (company members) use big crooks to assist kids in placing elastic up and through the growing tangle of strands. As time passes and the structure becomes denser, it morphs into a huge, bouncy playground. Tangle will be constructed in 30-minute performances on four days on Josie Robertson Plaza: on Thursday and Friday, July 26 and 27 at 2 p.m., 3 p.m. and 4 p.m., on Saturday, July 29 (Lincoln Center Out of Doors’ Family Day) at 11 a.m., 12 noon, 2 p.m., 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. and on July 29 at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 12 noon, 2 p.m., 3 p.m. and 4 p.m.

ALL EVENTS ARE FREE and take place on the Lincoln Center campus. Visit LCOutofDoors.org for complete schedule or call 212-875-5766 to request a brochure.
