Story ONE

Look of sound..

GOODWILL STORES
UNDER POSSIBLE NATIONAL
BOYCOTT
BUT, IN MEMPHIS OFFICIALS
ARE HOPING NOT TO GET
CAUGHT
Memphis, TN
06.17.2012

A national boycott is being threatened against the Goodwill organization regarding the non-profit organizations proposed change in the federal labor law effect by eliminating the ability to pay subminimum wages to workers with disabilities. In Memphis the affiliate pays minimum wage or better to 460 people with disabilities working in its stores, donation centers and on landscaping and janitorial crews at many local government worksites. The boycott is being advocated by The National Federation for the Blind after finding out that 64 of 165 Goodwill affiliates are paying subminimum wages as little as 22 cents and hour in one case. The former New York governor David Paterson is scheduled to endorse the possible nation wide boycott. Memphis officials are hoping their organizations will not be caught up in the boycott, and that it will cause little effect of areas Memphians participating in the boycott as the national one evolves. If the nation’s boycott is successful local officials said they will continue to comply with wage laws and their continuing support of providing earnest wages for its disabled employees. Although it is true some workers in Memphis are paid minimum wages, others make slightly less the law of minimum wages. Local officials think the required pay could cause a change in the way wages are calculated and would potentially cause a hardship in their current operation.

That’s one similar look of sound. Did you uncover it?

Well try the look again…

Story TWO

MEMPHIS AREA TRANSIT
MET WITH RIDERS IN
A NEIGHBORHOOD VISIT
Memphis, TN
06.18.2012

Bus riders and the Memphis Area Transit Authority met on Monday, June 18, 2012 in order to discuss some upcoming changes modifications in bus routes in territorial parts of the city. MATA officials visited met with people from the Mitchell community at the Mitchell Community Center which was hosted by the rider advocacy group. The MATA president Will Hudson noted that any modifications of change are to better use resources to riders and that the changes were small. Some of the residents voiced that many of the Boxtown community riders would be for to change buses in order to ride in to the Downtown area. In addition, some worried that elderly neighbors with fixed or limited income would have to spend more for fares due to that direct route to Downtown. Some of the community also voiced the rudeness of some bus drivers and the buses poor operation as far as air-conditioning in summer and heating in the winter along with frequent bus break downs. MATA said that bus condition was not the main objective of that particular meeting, but changes of routes. Hudson explained that the city’s budget is vital to MATA operations and if the budget is cut, there will be some apparent change to transit and how there may be operated. The visit with the community was to keep them alert of possible changes that depend on riders and future transit to pending neighborhoods involved.

What a visit. Looks and sounds as if not very much was accomplished solving problems in the MATA transit…
"But I don’t know, I didn’t sit in on the visit, nor did I attend."

Did you catch up on the look of sound?

Well try again….

DON’T BUDGE YET
MEMPHIS CITY COUNCIL
WANTS TO APPROVE A
NEW BUDGET
Memphis, TN
06.19.2012

The Memphis City Council met on June 19, 2012 to approve its operating budget from its last meeting. Two weeks ago the council approved a roughly $609 million dollar budget for city operations. The plan called for a mixing a one-time funds and budget cuts. The council set the city’s tax rate at $3.11 per $100 assessed value. The council rebuffed the Mayor’s call for a 47 cent property tax hike, and set the city’s overall tax rate at 8 cents lower than the current $3.19 cent. The council felt the victory is for the taxpayers and is far superior to what the Mayor had in mind. Other issues were planned as Councilman Edmund Ford, Jr. presenting a proposal to levy a 1 cent tax on every gallon of gasoline purchased in Memphis. Ford stated in by a local newspaper said “If that is approved by voters in November, the gasoline tax could bring roughly 6 million a year for public transportation, with most going to MATA [Memphis Area Transit Authority] and to paving Memphis streets and roads. There were others issues also put up for consideration for approval including an increase in sales taxes and a referendum ordinance asking voters to amend the city Charter to require the mayor and council to create a five year Strategic Business Plan and a 6 year consolidated budget for operations and capital improvements.

Don’t budge yet! There’ll be some more before this is approved as a new budget…
"Like OKAY!"
“It has the look of sound; though it’s all depends how you look and hear it.”

If you haven't “caught the boycott” or the "transit visit," neither "Bass Pro to Proceed," and finally the "budget to budge yet." It’s alright... You might have the look of sound now!!

FYI: Regarding that question of Sound Travel, and the speed of Sound
Here's science fact about sound waves:

The speed of a sound wave depends upon the medium through which it travels. In general, sound travels faster through solids than through liquids or gases. Also, the denser the medium, the slower sound will travel through it. The same sound will travel at a different speed on a cold day than it would on a warm day.

It's proven we're never to old to learn.. huh?
