Breast cancer is closely tied to estrogen exposure. Estrogen promotes cellular growth in the breasts so any factor that increases estrogen exposure may increase the risk of breast cancer. Exercise training significantly reduces estrogen production, which is the primary reason why it is recommended in the prevention and treatment of breast cancer. Moreover, vigorous types of exercise (i.e. high-intensity weight lifting, jogging at least 5 miles per hour, bicycling more than 10 miles per hour, swimming laps) lead to the greatest reductions in estrogen levels.
