LIFT SOCIAL SECURITY’S TAX CAP (509 hits)

DEMOCRATIC SENATOR INTRODUCES BILL TO LIFT SOCIAL SECURITY’S TAX CAP, EXTEND ITS SOLVENCY FOR DECADES

Most of the proposed solutions to the shortfall involve cutting back benefits and raising the minimum retirement age. Both are deeply problematic.

This week, however, Sen. Mark Begich (D-AK) put forward a reform package that goes in the opposite direction, while still financially securing the program’s trust fund for roughly the next seven decades. The Washington Post’s Dylan Matthews laid out the details:
The Begich bill would lift the current payroll tax cap, which exempts wages in excess of a certain amount ($110,100 this year) from the tax. In turn, it would give high earners, who would pay more, additional benefits upon retirement, just as benefits increase as wages do for workers below the cap. […] IT ALSO INCREASES BENEFITS ACROSS-THE-BOARD (for everyone).

The Congressional Research Service ran the numbers back in 2010 and concluded that eliminating the payroll tax cap — while also paying out the new benefits to wealthier Americans in accordance with their new taxes — would eliminate 95 percent of the trust fund’s shortfall over the next 75 years.

Seems like a promising approach. Not that I would have liked it back when I was paying into the system.

I found striking was the clip of Paul Ryan pressing the man formerly known as Maestro when he was still the Fed chairman to agree that private retirement accounts would be more stable than a government sponsored program. That’s such a Big Lie I’m amazed anyone can peddle it with a straight face.

This Real News Network interview with Bill Black provides an overview of why Wall Street and the Administration are so keen to gut well loved and socially valuable safety nets for the elderly, in particular, Social Security. This talk is a good introduction for people who may not understand how high the stakes in the budget fight are and why the economic arguments used to justify it are bogus.

Paul Jay peculiarly brings up Elizabeth Warren as a potential opponent to this initiative. Given the fact that her Senate run was a Democratic party idea, and that she was remarkably tongue tied in her first press conference, I would not expect her to take any bold moves soon.

It is like people have been brain wiped to not believe that a purpose of government is to take care of the less fortunate for the greater public good.

But then again we used to build in replacement costs into infrastructure development and do basic research like it was important to society. I guess that was before that cost of empire expansion and maintenance became too big and a military could be created that would turn on its own “family”….led by folks like Petreaus who we now see has the perfect moral values to decide about killing others in support of imperialism and the global inherited rich behind all of current societal control.

David, they call it a safety net? It damn well better be since they forced me to be a part of this safety net. And it took only 3 years for the safety net to catch me. 3 years. This is what we wanted, this is what we got, no going back now. They had damned well better not call it a safety net. Entitlement fine, because I damn well AM entitled.

Sorry David for going off like that. I do believe "to take care of the less fortunate for the greater public good." Not just public good though, since the less fortunate sustain the more fortunate. But that word "entitlement" just burns me, as if it is not something due!
