Palestinians flew their flags…..
The United Nations voted overwhelmingly to recognize a Palestinian state on November 29,1012. Two thirds of the world’s body 193 member states approved the resolution upgrading the Palestinians’ status from an observer to a nonmember observer state. The state is in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem, which is the territories captured by Israel in the 1967 Mideast war. This also grants Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas international endorsement for his key position. Palestinians flew their flags with cheers and with heaping triumphs to learn the news of the state’s independence. Thousands celebrated with peace signs and joyous voices chanting in the West Bank city of Ramallah ringed out “God is great!” With much to be thankful generally news sources contend that real independence is still an elusive dream until negotiations are solved to peace with the Israelis. Israel still controls the West Bank of Jerusalem and access to Gaza. This means that this may be a resolution, but not necessary a solution to peace. Palestine’s Leader Abbas called the day a “birth certificate of Palestine.”
There were some who voted against the resolution among them the United States and Israel. UN Ambassador Susan Rice who quoted “ Today’s unfortunate and counterproductive resolution places further obstacles in the path for peace.” Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu stated “The resolution won’t change anything on the ground.” In the meantime, Palestinians are favorable for the resolution and are looking forward to celebration in a resolution and solution which assigns to them as new birth!
