In an usual display of presidential emotion, President Barack Obama displayed the same sadness that millions of Americans are feeling in light of the horrific shooting that took place in an elementary school in Connecticut. This week, a deranged gunman went into an elementary school and killed 26 people, with 18 of them being children.
“Our hearts are broken today,” Obama said..
The president had to stop speaking several times in order to hold back his tears on the subject. The president didn’t try to over-politicize the issue, but never before has the issue of gun control been put more firmly on the table of national priorities.
“We’re going to have to come together and take meaningful action,” said the president.
The president mentioned that the young children ”had their whole lives ahead of them.”
The president has ordered all flags at federal facilities to fly half-mast to honor those who died in the incident. He has been receiving regular updates throughout the day, according to White House spokesman Jay Carney.
“As a father, incidents like these weigh heavily on him,” Carney said.
The gun control debate is one that has been firmly protected by the Republican Party, which is deeply connected to the gun lobby. Billions of dollars are made each year by the ready availability of guns, and the NRA is quick to respond whenever there is a national tragedy. But this shooting is different because there are so many children involved, and it’s difficult to support laws and policies that increase the chances that children are harmed. In light of the alarming impact of this terrible situation, this could be a chance for Washington politicians to come together to get something done on the matter so that other children are protected.
