It's part of an ongoing program of cooperation in the military sphere.
Both sides are hopeful that an improvement in military relations will bring stability to the region.
The drills are aimed at boosting cooperation between the armed forces of Russia and China as they look to tackle the new dangers facing the World in the 21st century.
Held under the auspices of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, a regional security group consisting of China and Russia as well as Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, the drills are aimed at cementing a military partnership between the two countries, as they grow increasingly wary of instability in their Central Asian neighbors.
As many as 1,300 troops from each country are taking part, backed up by 22 Russian planes and 40 Chinese military aircraft, including fighter-bombers, armed helicopters, and transport planes.
