Dear Steve,
Last night, Senator Rand Paul led a historic filibuster against Barack Obama's targeted drone strikes on American citizens.
By the end of the night, numerous senators found their way to the floor to Stand With Rand!
But not Senator Lindsey Graham.
When Senator Graham finally found his way to the floor this morning, it wasn't to side with the American people in this common-sense fight.
Instead, Lindsey Graham enthusiastically attacked Rand Paul for filibustering, saying "it's not fair to the President" because the decision to murder American citizens should "reside in the Commander in Chief."
And to no one's surprise, Senator John McCain joined his statist buddy to ridicule Rand Paul for having the nerve to oppose our government murdering American citizens.
What was Rand Paul's crime?
He simply wanted Attorney General Eric Holder to answer the question, "does the President have the authority to use a weaponized drone to kill an American not engaged in combat on American soil?"
Well, just this afternoon, Barack Obama caved - and Eric Holder answered Rand Paul's question with a "NO."
Steve, Rand Paul's victory against the establishment proves there's never been a better time for freedom-loving Americans to stand up to an out-of-control, reckless government.

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said Thursday he would vote for CIA director nominee John Brennan because Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) filibustered his appointment over questions about the administration's drone program.
"I was going to vote against him until the filibuster, so he picked up one vote," Graham said, laughing to reporters in the Capitol.

John Brennan confirmed as CIA director, but filibuster brings scrutiny of drone program
The American Civil Liberties Union issued a statement supporting Paul. “There is now a truly bipartisan coalition in Congress and among the public demanding that President Obama turn over the legal opinions claiming the authority to kill people far from a battlefield, including American citizens,” said Laura W. Murphy, director of the ACLU’s Washington Legislative Office.

Well about the drones first. So the Senate had to endure a 13 hour filibuster. Did he disturb their vacation? Probably not. At least they got to use the bathroom.
As far as Graham, I think he just told his representees why they shouldn't vote for him next time around.

He is not my Rand Paul though Robert. But he is someone to watch, and he didn't violate any rules or procedures in performing a filibuster. I am against drones, so I guess I have some common ground with him on that subject.
Some things I post for informational purposes, even if I disagree with what I am posting, like the Glenn Beck/Wayne LaPierre foolishness on my other recent blog. As an NRA member, I did call NRA and register a complaint about that email I got from them. Wayne LaPierre should be replaced, but I don't think they'd listen to me on that one. But I am still an NRA member.

I expect to se Rand Paul run for President in 2016. This is why he did question drones overseas, but left the question open, because he can't afford to totally alienate the military industry complex. I sure hope I never see the day when armed drones are used on American soil by the military. Could they be used by the FBI in response to an immediate threat? Rand Paul says yes, just like they can use other types of deadly force.

His point is that if any President, not just Obama, were to order a drone strike on American soil, this would be in effect martial law, because the President is commander in chief of the U.S. armed forces. The FBI on the other hand is the federal police force. Big difference.

I like this guy and I would like to see him become the next President of the United States! I'm standing with him against tax dollars going towards abortions. I don't like the notion that my dollars are going to help someone kill an unborn child. If women want to kill their unborn offspring, they shouldn't do it with my tax dollars!

Gene Healy: Rand Paul vs. the 'forever war'

The cruelest thing about politics is that it occasionally gets your hopes up. Sometimes, just when you've almost concluded that the best D.C. has to offer is ringside seats at the latest legislative catastrophe, you get an unexpected outbreak of political courage and common sense.
So it was a cruel trick Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., played last Wednesday with his 13-hour filibuster of CIA director nominee John Brennan. For a not-so-brief moment, it seemed possible to restore "normalcy" and bring an end to endless war.
The immediate subject of Paul's marathon session -- whether the administration could legally execute an American citizen on American soil via flying kill-bot -- is, admittedly, an unlikely scenario. Still, I had to laugh when, amid the filibuster, I saw a blog post from the Obamaphilic Center for American Progress, breathlessly warning that the "Number of Radical Anti-Government Groups 'Reached an All-Time High' in 2012." Homeland Security isn't serious enough about fighting "patriot" groups, who fear federal policies "aimed at taking away American freedoms." So send in the drones, already!
But Paul devoted considerable time to a more pressing issue: the increasingly tenuous legal authority for our ever-expanding war on terror. More than a decade after Sept. 11, the legal basis for that war is the Authorization for the Use of Military Force that Congress passed on Sept. 14, 2001, empowering the president to go after those responsible for that atrocity and anyone who "harbored" them.
As Paul noted, "they take that authorization of use of force to mean pretty much anything." We need a serious debate, he said, about "whether that use or authorization of force is open-ended, forever."
Indeed, on the morning of Paul's filibuster, the Washington Post's front page blared: "Administration debates stretching 9/11 law to go after new al-Qaeda offshoots." Actually, they've already stretched it beyond recognition.
As Paul pointed out Wednesday, counterterror mission creep has led to "war in Yemen, Somalia, Mali. It is a war in unlimited places" against increasingly marginal groups that didn't exist on Sept. 11. In Mali, the Post reported, "unarmed U.S. Reapers scour the deserts ... to search for so-called patterns of life -- communications and movements deemed by the U.S. to be telltale signs of militant activity." The targeting information we've passed on has "led to nearly 60 French airstrikes in the past week alone."
Paul raised the possibility of "blowback" from the "inadvertent killing of civilians" -- nearly 200 children in Pakistan alone, for example.
After Paul's filibuster, self-styled "serious conservatives" rose to chastise him. Sen. John McCain, R.-Ariz., who at a 2007 campaign appearance sang "bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb Iran" to the tune of the Beach Boys' "Barbara Ann," said, "I don't think what happened yesterday is helpful to the American people."
David Frum, author of such conservative classics as the George W. Bush hagiography "The Right Man" and (with Richard Perle) "An End to Evil," insisted that sober, responsible conservatives shouldn't "stand with Rand."
But Paul's concerns echo an older, wiser tradition in American conservatism. In 1967, Russell Kirk praised the late Sen. Robert A. Taft for insisting that war had to be a last resort, threatening as it did to "make the American President a virtual dictator, diminish the constitutional powers of Congress, contract civil liberties, injure the habitual self-reliance and self-government of the American people, distort the economy, sink the federal government in debt, [and erode] public morality."
Does any of that sound familiar?
Sen. Paul has done Republicans -- and the Republic -- a great service by reminding us that there's nothing conservative about perpetual war.
