10 YEAR OLD BOY SHOT DURING JUNETEENTH CELEBRATION; 15 YEAR OLD ARRESTED (1068 hits)
Columbus, OHIO--A Juneteenth shooting has left fans in shock as a 10 year old boy was rushed to hospital in the frightening incident on Saturday night in Ohio. A 15 year old has been charged with felonious assault in the Juneteenth Festival shooting, which took place at Franklin Park, outside downtown Columbus.
Police also have reported that two other teenagers may have been involved in the incident, and the investigations are still ongoing.
The victim's injuries are not thought to be life threatening, and he is being treated at the local Nationwide Children's Hospital where he remains in a stable condition, according to reports.
The shooting left festival-goers in shock and fearing for their safety, and as a safety precaution authorities closed the park just after 7 p.m. local time – a full two hours before the event was supposed to end for the day.
The Juneteenth Festival is a three day event, which is also known as Emancipation or Freedom Day, commemorates the announcement of the abolition of slavery in the United States.
June 19th is the date in 1865 when Texas slaves learned the Emancipation Proclamation declared their freedom. Juneteenth is recognized as a state holiday or special day of observance in 42 states and the District of Columbia.
One eye witness of the incident at the festival, Crystal Coleman, told NBC 4: "To know why we're coming together and we mess it us up that's so awful, it's sickening."
Local resident Benita David also told NBC, "Every year they get out here and show out. Now we're not going to have anything we can do that represents the African-American community and it's a disgrace."
That's why I don't attend public events like this. My wife and I just gather and hold teach-ins at my home in order to meditate on the role and responsibility of black people.
