It has long been proposed that adopting a diet rich in alkaline foods can be effective in preventing and treating a number of health conditions. Alkaline foods are those that are rich in alkaline minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium as opposed to acidic minerals like chloride, phosphorous, and sulfur. The body can absorb alkaline minerals but not acidic ones; therefore, acidic foods may increase acid levels in the urine, leading to health problems. While eating alkaline foods may have significant benefits, little is known about the health consequences of adopting an exclusively alkaline diet.
