Interesting about the sword making. I may have told you this on the phone, but WW II disrupted the centuries-old tradition of Japanese sword making. First, leading up to the war and during, lots of inferior swords were made for the officers. After the war, these were all rounded up and destroyed. Then the Japanese were prohibited by the Allies from making swords for a period of 7 years, as I recall. During this time many of the older smiths died and so the sword making industry had to be reestablished. Even today the Japanese government requires all swordsmiths to be licensed, and a smith can make no more than 2 swords a month, so that the highest quality is maintained.
