EBONY Magazine Features Miss Grambling State University, Geralka Jackson (4812 hits)

Miss GSU 2012-13 is one of 10 HBCU campus queens in the national magazine

Miss Grambling State University 2012-13 has been chosen as one of 10 historically black university campus queens to be featured in the September issue of Ebony magazine.

Geralka Jackson, a May 2013 university graduate who reigned as Grambling State’s queen for the most recent academic year, competed for the magazine feature honor with HBCU campus queens from across the nation. “It's an honor to be able to continue to represent my alma mater on a national level even after I've graduated,” said Jackson, 22, who works as an admissions recruiter and counselor at Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, La. “Being chosen as a top HBCU Campus Queen is a wonderful way to end my tenure at Grambling State University. Hopefully the feature can be used as a way to recruit new students.”

Ebony touts its support for programs “that celebrate and nurture young Black women” and says “The EBONY HBCU Campus Queens program honors young women at the nation's Historically Black Colleges and Universities who are role models of both beauty and ambition on campus and in their communities.”

Jackson, who graduated with a degree in mass communication, worked with others to produce a strong biographical sketch and a compelling video seeking support, and both were posted on ebony.com.

"Our own Miss Grambling State University has represented us well during 2012-2013, and now all of America will see how poised, smart and talented Gerri is as they learn more about her in Ebony and on ebony.com," said Grambling State University President Frank G. Pogue. "We know it was a competition among the nation's historically black universities to get one of only 10 spots for HBCU campus queens, and we're proud of Team Grambling State voting enough to allow Gerri to represent our university."

This means a lot for us as more people learn more about Grambling State University," added Pogue. He noted that even with her various campus activities, Jackson earned a 3.5 GPA and was a part of the university’s prestigious Earl Lester Cole Honors College. "Gerri was a stellar student, an articulate and well-spoken representative and she's started a professional career that I know will be distinguished."

During the summer Jackson worked two jobs as a marketing promotions and events associate, one at Horseshoe Casino and the other at Harrah's Louisiana. Both are Caesars Entertainment companies, and both are based in Shreveport, La.

Jackson was one of the HBCU campus queens that participated in a month-long contest in which the public could visit Ebony's website, voting often or even daily for a favorite HBCU Queen. Jackson made the cut to the top 15 campus queens and voting continued. When voting was closed, the suspense began. There was no announcement about the top 10 campus queens until the magazine hit the newsstands a few days ago.
“I was elated to find out that I had accumulated enough votes to be featured in the magazine.,” added Jackson.

Other HBCU campus queens featured in the magazine including young women from Savannah State University in Georgia, Hampton University in Virginia, Florida A&M University in Florida, Jackson State University in Mississippi, Alcorn State University in Mississippi, Tuskegee University in Alabama, Cheyney University in Pennsylvania, Tougaloo University in Mississippi and Bennett College in Greensboro, NC.
