In 1995, the City Sun, an African-American newspaper, hired Samuel to investigate allegations of contemporary enslavement of black Africans in Mauritania and Sudan. Samuel’s conclusion was startling: chattel slavery of black Africans is still an entrenched problem in some African countries. He found that race was the determining factor in slavery, and that dark-skinned Muslims and black Christians are being held in bondage by lighter-skinned Muslims. Samuel found people willing to risk their lives in Africa to carry out strategies for resistance. He went undercover for 28 days to interview leaders of anti-slavery operations in Mauritania, as well as slaves and runaway slaves. In Mauritania alone, he estimates, there are 90,000 slaves, but the government suppresses all information and punishes any form of resistance. He explains, “I felt guilty doing the interviews because I knew I could get them (anti-slavery leaders) in trouble. But they kept telling me: ‘Our job is to die for this.’” Anti-slavery workers in Mauritania are often tortured, and are sent to prison. Sometimes they disappear.

Slavery in Mauritania is an entrenched phenomenon the national government has repeatedly tried to abolish, banning the practice in 1905, 1981, and August 2007.[1][2] The descendants of black Africans abducted into slavery now live in Mauritania as "blacks" or haratin and some of them still serve the light-skinned "Moors" (Berbers or mixed Berber-Arabs, collectively known as al-bidhaan, meaning: "the whites").

The number of slaves in the country is estimated to be up to 600,000 men, women and children, or 20% of the population [3][4] of 3,069,000 people. Even though slavery is illegal, sociologist Kevin Bales believes that Mauritania is the country with the largest proportion of its population in slavery.[5]

Mauritanian organizations like Al'Hor الحر (translated as "the free"), In'itaq إنعتاق (translated as "emancipation") and SOS Esclaves (meaning "SOS Slaves" in French) work against slavery.

A United Nations mission, headed by UN Special Rapporteur and mission leader Gulnara Shahinian, was in Mauritania in November 2009 to evaluate slavery practices in the country.[6] The mission's findings were presented to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in August 2010.

Why do slaves so often accept their position?

Slaves believe that if they do not obey their masters, they will not go to paradise. They are raised in a social and religious system that everyday reinforces this idea. In society, a slave needs a master to protect him or her: to bring them to the hospital, to bring kids to school, to represent them in court. Slaves need a protector or an intermediary to get by in Mauritanian society. The bidanes run the government, the military, the courts, the schools. Slaves cannot revolt because they would lose everything. They can only hope for justice and legal protection if they have a master.

When and how did slavery in Mauritania begin?

Around 1000 A.D., the Arab and Berber tribes came south to Islamize the Africans. The Africans were animists, who worshipped the sun. Their land, by the way, used to be a very green, lush area - now it is all desert. When the Africans resisted Islamization, they were enslaved. This began centuries of chattel slavery - slavery that has not ended. We didn't learn this history in school; we simply grew up within this social hierarchy and lived it. I should also note that the Muslim missionaries found slavery within the African social context. Within pockets of Mauritania's free Black African population, this practice actually continued through the 1960s. But Mauritania's African society evolved more quickly, as the French colonial influence was stronger. So African-on-African slavery gradually disappeared. However, all slaves in Mauritania are Muslims, like their masters.

A Victim's Story

Bilal wakes before dawn each day. He eats the leftover food scraps from the plate of his master, barely enough nourishment for his 20 year-old frame. By the time the sun is up, he is driving a donkey cart to the local well. He fills two 60-liter containers and begins watering rounds that will not end until sundown. Bilal is not allowed a break. Working through the desert's afternoon heat, he makes up to ten trips each day, traveling many miles to deliver water to those who can afford it. He is paid at each stop. The money, however, is passed on to his master. At night, Bilal continues work, cleaning and serving his master. He is finally permitted to rest at midnight. Every day is like this. Bilal was born a slave. Will he die a slave?

Estimates of the number of black Africans enslaved in Mauritania range from 100,000 to as many as one million. Chattel slavery, in which one person is owned as another's property, has existed in Mauritania for 800 years-born out of racism and a skewed version of Islamic fundamentalism. Slaves are raised to believe that serving their Arab-Berber masters is a religious duty, and most remain in bondage their entire lives.

Causes of Slavery

Slavery has been a part of Mauritanian society for centuries. 800 years ago, Arab and Berber tribes descended from the Mediterranean peninsula and launched slave raids against the indigenous African population, abducting women and children as slaves. Those enslaved were converted to Islam and raised to believe that their religious duty was to serve their masters faithfully. Slaves were taught that because of their impure dark skin they were forbidden from touching the Koran, praying in the mosque, and attending school. The saying "paradise under your master's foot" embodied the notion that the path to salvation was through loyal servitude.

While Christianity was once used in a similar manner to justify slavery to Africans ensnared by the trans-Atlantic slave trade, Mauritania's system persists today in the 21st century. Moors still hold "haratine" slaves, descendants of those abducted centuries ago. Slaves are bought and sold, branded and bred, and even given to the poor as an act of charity. Some are trafficked to Gulf states or even serve in embassies around the world.

Black slavery is simply an integral part of Mauritanian society, with slaves performing all sorts of physical labor. Mauritania has theoretically outlawed slavery three times, most recently with a military edict in 1980. But local Islamic courts rarely enforce anti-slavery statutes, and there is no evidence of widespread emancipation. The U.S. State Department used to cite Mauritania for slavery each year in its human rights reports, but the U.S. government has chosen to overlook the country's pervasive system of human bondage after Mauritania joined the Middle East peace process.

The Process of Enslavement

Haratines remain enslaved to the same families for generations. Slaves do various types of work, as the Beydannes believe it is shameful to use their own hands for labor. In the countryside, slaves are agricultural laborers, maintaining crops for their masters. In cities, workers may be house servants or builders, forced to work every day. The only change from the past is that the slaves are no longer captured, as more than enough are simply born into bondage.

The life of a slave is tedium punctured by terror. Most slaves perform grinding chores for years on end. Yet those who disappoint their masters are often tortured. Human rights reports describe awful tortures, including insects being stuffed inside slaves' ears and slaves being ripped apart. Because haratine slaves perform all of the household's physical labor, violence is used by masters to assert their authority and discipline any signs of insubordination.

Enslaved women are often kept as concubines, raped by members of the master's family. Slaves are not allowed to marry without the master's consent, and women are stripped of the right of motherhood: At the master's whim, their children can be taken from them and sold off or given as wedding gifts. As an act of repentance, masters will often donate one of their slaves to the poor.

Beydannes rarely release their slaves and escape is rare, given that the ideology of slavery is accepted by both masters and slaves. As one enslaved woman told the New York Times, "God created me to be a slave, just as he created the camel to be a camel." Denied an education and trapped within Mauritania's pervasive racism and poverty, haratine slaves can hardly dream of freedom, let alone experience it.

Country Report: Sudan

Amidst Sudan's on-going civil war, Arab militias armed by the Sudanese government raid black African villages and abduct civilians as chattel slaves.

A Victim's Story

When Francis Bok was seven years old, his mother sent him to the local market to sell eggs and beans. Suddenly, government militia forces attacked, shooting adults and rounding up children. Francis saw one girl who would not stop crying get shot in the head. When her sister burst out crying, the soldiers chopped off her foot. Strapped to a donkey and taken north, Francis was given as a slave to one of the soldiers. The man's entire family came out to greet Francis - by beating him. Every day he was forced to tend cattle and was beaten every morning. At age 17, he ran away. "I would rather die than be a slave," says Francis.

Sudan's on-going civil war and inter-ethnic conflict has seen a revival of black chattel slavery, where southern women and children are abducted as slaves by government-armed Arab militia forces. Over 100,000 remain in bondage today, serving as domestics and concubines.

Country Background

Sudan is the largest country in Africa, covering 2.5 million square kilometers. Sudan means "land of the blacks" in Arabic, and for centuries black Africans were abducted in Sudan as part of the Arabian slave trade. Sudan's borders - drawn by the British during colonialism - encompass a predominantly Arab-Islamic north and a black African south of various faiths. Inter-ethnic conflict and civil war have plagued Sudan since its independence in 1956. A growing radical Islamic movement pressured the government to impose Sharia, or Islamic law, on all of Sudan in 1983 - at which time slave raids were reintroduced against black African villages in the south and Nuba Mountains. A 1989 military coup by radical Islamist General Omar el-Bashir spurred a dramatic increase in slave raids by Arab militia forces armed by the government.

Causes of Slavery

Slavery has deep roots in Sudan, and black southerners have been targeted by northern slave raiders for centuries. Located just below Egypt, Sudan offered a sizable population of potential black slaves for Arabian trade routes. Today's slave raids are a revival of that ancient practice, with Arab tribesman exhorted by the government to attack southern "infidels" in a self-declared "holy war."

Slave raids are used by the government to terrorize civilian populations in southern Sudan and the Nuba Mountains. Militia are armed by the government but not paid. Militiamen destroy villages and take their pay in booty: livestock, grain, and women and children. Men are shot because they pose a great physical threat. But women and children are considered easily coercible and thus constitute the marauders' prize reward.

The Process of Enslavement

Women and children abducted in slave raids are roped by the neck or strapped to animals and then marched north. Along the way, many women and girls are repeatedly gang-raped. Children who will not be silent are shot on the spot.

In the north, slaves are either kept by individual militia soldiers or sold in markets. Boys work as livestock herders, forced to sleep with the animals they care for. Some who try to escape have their Achilles tendons cut to hamper their ability to run. Masters typically use women and girls as domestics and concubines, cleaning by day and serving the master s*xually by night.

Survivors report being called abeed ("black slave"), enduring daily beatings, and receiving awful food. Masters also strip slaves of their religious and cultural identities, giving them Arabic names and forcing them to pray as Muslims. Slaves often live alone with the master's family - ripped from their parents and separated from other southerners. As one survivor recalls, "For ten years, I had no one to laugh with."

Some slaves manage to escape. But the most common form of redemption is provided by Arab rescuers who conduct a Sudanese version of the Underground Railroad. These retrievers help slaves escape or pose as buyers and purchase slaves from masters. The retrievers lead slaves back to the south through a network of safe houses and night routes. Back in their home villages, the slaves are redeemed by local leaders with support from Western humanitarian groups. Wives and children are reunited with their spouses and parents or are taken in by their extended families.

Response on the Ground

Fighting the government is a coalition of opposition forces led by the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA), a black African rebel force. The SPLA has shored up its defenses in areas most targeted by slave raiders, which has helped reduce the number of successful slave raids.

Though initiated by local Arab and African tribes who formed a peace treaty, the slave redemption program today enjoys considerable support from Christian Solidarity International (CSI), a Swiss-based humanitarian organization. Prominent civil rights leaders - most notably Rev. Al Sharpton, Congressman Walter Fauntroy, and NAACP activist Joe Madison - have recently assisted CSI's missions.

In addition, a coalition of humanitarian organizations, including the American Anti-Slavery Group and the Salvation Army, has formed the Sudan Campaign - a movement to stop genocide and slavery in Sudan.

My father told me that Hakim bin Hizam manumitted one-hundred captive/slave in the pre-lslamic period of ignorance and slaughtered one-hundred camels (and distributed them in charity).
When he embraced Islam he again slaughtered one-hundred camels and manumitted one-hundred captive/slave. Hakim said, "I asked Allaah's Apostle, 'O Allaah's Apostle! What do you think about some good deeds I used to practice in the prelslamic period of ignorance regarding them as deeds of righteousness?' Allaah's Apostle said, "You have embraced AlIslaam along with all those good deeds you did."

Narrated Marwan and AlMiswar bin Makhrama:

When the delegates of the tribe of Hawazin came to the Prophet and they requested him to return their properties and captives. The Prophet stood up and said to them, "I have other people with me in this matter (as you see) and the most beloved statement to me is the true one; you may choose either the properties or the prisoners as I have delayed their distribution."
The Prophet had waited for them for more than ten days since his arrival from Ta'if. So, when it became evident to them that the Prophet was not going to return them except one of the two, they said, "We choose our prisoners." The Prophet got up amongst the people and glorified and praised Allaah as He deserved and said, "Then after, these brethren of yours have come to us with repentance, and I see it logical to return them the captives. So, who ever amongst you likes to do that as a favor, then he can do it, and whoever of you likes to stick to his share till we recompense him from the very first war booty which Allaah will give us, then he can do so (give up the present captives)."
The people unanimously said, "We do that (return the captives) willingly." The Prophet said, "We do not know which of you has agreed to it and which have not, so go back and let your leaders forward us your decision." So, all the people then went back and discussed the matter with their leaders who returned and informed the Prophet that all the people had willingly given their consent to return the captives. This is what has reached us about the captives of Hawazin. Narrated Anas that 'Abbas said to the Prophet, "I paid for my ransom and Aqil's ransom."

Bukhari :: Book 3 :: Volume 46 :: Hadith 719
Narrated Abu Huraira:

I have loved the people of the tribe of Bani Tamim ever since I heard, three things, Allaah's Apostle said about them. I heard him saying, These people (of the tribe of Bani Tamim) would stand firm against Ad-Dajjal."
When the Sadaqat (gifts of charity) from that tribe came, Allah's Apostle said, "These are the Sadaqat (charitable gifts) of our folk."
'Aisha had a captive/slave-girl from that tribe, and the Prophet said to 'Aisha, "Manumit her as she is a descendant of Ishmael (the Prophet)."

Narrated Abu Musa:

Allaah's Apostle said, "He who has a captive/slave-girl and educates and treats her nicely and then manumits and marries her, will get a double reward."

I saw Abu Dhar Al-Ghifari wearing a cloak, and his captive/slave, too, was wearing a cloak. We asked him about that (how both were wearing similar cloaks). He replied, "Once I abused a man and he complained of me to the Prophet . The Prophet asked me, 'Did you abuse him by slighting his mother?'
He added, 'Your captive/slave are your brethren upon whom Allaah has given you authority.
So, if one has one's brethren under one's control, one should feed them with the like of what one eats and clothe them with the like of what one wears.
You should not overburden them with what they cannot bear, and if you do so, help them (in their hard job)."

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allaah's Apostle said, "A pious captive/slave gets a double reward." Abu Huraira added: By Him in Whose Hands my soul is but for Jihad, Hajj, and my duty to serve my mother, I would have loved to die as a captive/slave.

Narrated Abu Huraira and Zaid bin Khalid:

The Prophet said, "If a captive/slave-girl (Ama) commits illegal s*xual intercourse, punish her; if she does it again, punish her again; if she repeats it, punish her again." The narrator added that on the third or the fourth offence, the Prophet said,
"Sell her even for a hair rope."

Narrated Abu Huraira:

The Prophet said, "When your servant brings your meals to you then if he does not let him sit and share the meals, then he should at least give him a mouthful or two mouthfuls of that meal or a meal or two meals, as he has prepared it."

Narrated Aisha:

Buraira came (to 'Aisha) and said, "I have made a contract of emancipation with my masters for nine Uqiyas (of gold) to be paid in yearly installments.
I seek your help." 'Aisha said, "If your masters agree, I will pay them the sum at once and free you on condition that your Wala' will be for me." Buraira went to her masters but they refused that offer. She (came back) and said, "I presented to them the offer but they refused, unless the Wala' was for them."
Allaah's Apostle heard of that and asked me about it, and I told him about it. On that he said, "Buy and manumit her and stipulate that the Wala' should be for you, as Wala' is for the liberator." 'Aisha added, "Allaah's Apostle then got up amongst the people, Glorified and Praised Allaah, and said, 'Then after: What about some people who impose conditions which are not present in Allaah's Laws? So, any condition which is not present in Allaah's Laws is invalid even if they were one-hundred conditions. Allaah's ordinance is the truth, and Allaah's condition is stronger and more solid. Why do some men from you say, O so-and-so! manumit the captive/slave but the Wala will be for me?
Truly, the Wala is for the liberator."

The idea of the ‘carpenter’ is a translation error.

QUAKERS Wrote and Believed

Part of "the negro problem", in antebellum USA, was; what to do with former slaves that had become free?

Since the eighteenth century Quakers and others had preached the sinfulness of slave ownership,

and the number of freedmen/women was rising and showed every sign that it would continue to grow.

The freed slaves married and had children, so the number of free people of color was rising even faster.

Some owners freed their slaves in their wills. Philanthropic societies and individuals raised or donated funds

to purchase slaves' freedom; freedmen sometimes were able to purchase the freedom of family members.

In some Northern cities there were more than a handful of escaped slaves.

The status of these free blacks was anything but comfortable.

They were not citizens and in most states could not vote. They had no access to the courts

or protection by the police. In no state could their children attend the public schools.

They were subject to discriminatory treatment in everyday life that makes the Jim Crow period look good!!

The original "remedy" for this problem was to help them go "back to Africa".

The British had been doing this, in Sierra Leone, moving there former American slaves that had gained

their freedom by escaping to British lines during the American Revolution, and who found Nova Scotia,

where the British took many of them, too cold. The British also took to Sierra Leone slaves captured

from slaving ships, being smuggled illegally across the Atlantic to North America. A well-to-do African

shipowner, Paul Cuffe, transported some former slaves to Sierra Leone.

However, sending former slaves to a British colony as a policy was politically unacceptable.

The American Colonization Society was formed to help found a new, American colony of freed blacks.

Although there was some talk of locating it in the American territories of the midwest, or on the Pacific

coast—a sort of reservation for Blacks—what was decided to follow the English example and start an

African colony. The closest available land was what became Liberia.

The rejection of colonization...The colonization project got off to a good start, with various governmental

and private donations and the participation of distinguished individuals:

U.S. Presidents Jefferson, Monroe, and Madison; Senator Henry Clay, who presided over its first meeting;

as well as most of the future white abolitionists. The problem had been solved, and in an honorable way.

The former slaves would fare better in Africa, among other blacks.

This happy situation quickly started to unravel.

First of all, the disease rates were ghastly, the highest since accurate record-keeping began.

Over 50% of the colonists died of malaria and other diseases.

Particularly telling to Gerrit Smith, the abolitionist philanthropist, was that the American Colonization

allowed the sale of alcohol (nasties, like guns and tobacco) in the colonies which became Liberia.

He comments on it in the Society's African Repository magazine. Smith was for temperance, which was

the only respectable position. That blacks in Africa were allowed to import liquor from the United States

revealed the true venality of the white members of the American Colonization Society: its goal

was to get rid of the blacks, and they sure didn't want them up north.

Harriet Elisabeth Beecher Stowe-uncleTOM author was a colonizationist, and gave a speech on that topic

to the Cincinnati Colonization Society on June 4, 1834. At Lane there was a "colonization society", supporting

the efforts of the American Colonization Society to send free blacks to (not "back to") Africa, to Liberia.

How it came to be is not known, but it was there when the Oneida contingent and friends arrived.

What Quaker Colonizationists wanted was immediate, complete, and uncompensated freeing of all slaves.

Quakers wanted to convince their Society of the superiority of the abolitionist view.

When the merits of the proposed solutions to slavery were debated over 18 days at the Seminary in

February, 1834, it was one of the first major public discussions of the topic, but it was more of

an anti-slavery revival than a "debate."

The stated topics of the debates.....The two specific questions addressed were:

"Ought the people of the slaveholding states abolish slavery immediately?", and

"Are the doctrines, tendencies, and measures of the American Colonization Society, and the influence

of its principal supporters, such as render it worthy of the patronage of the Christian public?"

The debates were not transcribed, and there was no attempt afterwards, as there would be later with

Pennsylvania Hall, to collect the texts which were written out — not all were — and make a booklet of them.

The slave revolution of 1712 was instigated by African-born slaves, who used the tenets of African-based

religion to encourage other slaves to revolt, calling for a war on Christians.

In the early 1700s, New York had one of the largest slave populations of any of England’s Colonies.

One out of every five New York residents was enslaved.

The enslaved Africans were skilled workers, carpenters, stone masons, fishermen, and boat builders.

These slaves lived and worked next to free and indentured whites.......

A slave market was built near Wall Street to accommodate the increase in slaves being imported by the Royal

African Company; first begun by King James with outright African theft of children....1609.....

....This 1st American Revolution from English COLONIAL Rule did not succeed....

So at the End of this 1st American Thirst for Freedom; hallmark for Men and Women for Freedom......

English Colonial forces arrested seventy African Slaves and jailed them.

Of the approximately 40 slaves brought to trial, 18 were acquitted and a few others were pardoned.

The rest were brutally executed: four were burned alive; one was crushed by a wheel;

one was kept in chains until he starved to death;

a pregnant woman was kept alive until she gave birth and was then executed; and the others were hanged...

The relationship between doctors and enslaved.. was compromised because slaveholders owned slave bodies.

..slaveholders used medicine to punish and torture slaves.

slave, Moses Roper, detailed an example in his 1838 narrative about his escape from South Carolina. A

slave owner forced a female slave to consume as much castor oil, a purgative, as she could.

Afterward, he forced her into a wooden box and weighed it down with stones, so she couldn't open it.

He left her in that box for one night, essentially burying her alive in her own waste.

One owner ordered a slave to take vomit-inducing medicine to entertain his family.

Another punished slaves by placing them in stocks arranged above each other. He then forced them to take

large doses of medication and release their "filth down upon each other."

In the 1840s, a 17-year-old enslaved woman endured 30 such surgeries, according to Dr. J. Marion Sims'..

dead bodies from slave cemeteries.....

In an 1824 advertisement for the Medical College of South Carolina, the school boasted about the number

of corpses it would have for medical research

– "subjects being obtained from among the colored population in sufficient number for every purpose,

and proper dissection carried on without offending any individual in the community."

On March 4, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln took the oath of office for the second time.

"Fellow countrymen: at this second appearing to take the oath of the presidential office there is
less occasion for an extended address than there was at the first.

.....Now, at the expiration of four years during which public declarations have been constantly called forth
on every point and phase of the great contest which still absorbs the attention and engrosses the energies of the nation little that is new could be presented.

The progress of our arms, upon which all else chiefly depends is as well known to the public as to myself and
it is I trust reasonably satisfactory and encouraging to all.

With high hope for the future no prediction in regard to it is ventured.

"On the occasion corresponding to four years ago all thoughts were directed to an impending civil war.

All dreaded it ~ all sought to avert it. While the inaugural address was being delivered from this place devoted altogether to saving the Union without war insurgent agents were in the city seeking to destroy it without war ~ seeking to dissolve the Union and divide effects by negotiation.

Both parties deprecated war but one of them would make war rather than let the nation survive, and the other would accept war rather than let it perish. And the war came.

"One eighth of the population were colored slaves not over the union but localized in the southern part...

These slaves constituted a peculiar and powerful interest.

All knew that this interest was somehow the cause of the war.

To strengthen perpetuate and extend this interest was the object the insurgents would rend the Union
even by war while the government claimed no right to do more than to restrict the territorial enlargement of it.

Neither party expected for the war the magnitude or the duration which it has already attained.

Neither anticipated that the cause of the conflict might cease with or even before the conflict itself should cease.

Each looked for an easier triumph and a result less fundamental and astounding.

Both read the same Bible and pray to the same God and each invokes His aid against the other.

It may seem strange that any men should dare to ask a just God's assistance in wringing their bread from the
sweat of other men's faces but let us judge not that we be not judged.

The prayers of both could not be answered ~ that of neither has been answered fully......

If we shall suppose that American slavery.....

...is one of those offenses which in the providence of God must needs come but which having continued through His appointed time He now wills to remove and that He gives to both North and South this terrible war as the woe due to those by whom the offense came shall we discern therein any departure from those divine attributes which the believers in a living God always ascribe to Him. Fondly do we hope ~ fervently do we pray ~ that this mighty scourge of war may speedily pass away. Yet, if God wills that it continue until all the wealth piled by the bondsman's two hundred and fifty years of unrequited toil shall be sunk and until every drop of blood drawn with the lash shall be paid by another drawn with the sword as was said three thousand years ago so still it must be said 'the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.'

"With malice toward none with charity for all with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right let
us strive on to finish the work we are in to bind up the nation's wounds, to care for him who shall have borne
the battle and for his widow and his orphan ~ to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves....."

conservative Christians denounced Warnock as a “heretic”..downplaying the story of Jesus’ bodily resurrection and

..for claiming that humans can save themselves rather than God, who alone saves humans from their sins.

liberal Christians came to Warnock’s defense, citing credentials as Theologian/Pastor of Atlanta’s Ebenezer Baptist

The Resurrection

Easter is the Christian holiday which commemorates the story of Jesus Christ’s resurrection.

..to the Christian faith, resurrection is the pivotal event on which “God raised Jesus from the dead on the third day”

after he was crucified by the Colonialist Roman governor Pontius Pilate orders....

..none of the four canonical Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John describe the actual event of the resurrection..

they nonetheless give varying reports about the empty tomb and Christ’s post-resurrection appearances among

Belgium’s King Philippe expressed his regret for the countless “violent acts and humiliations”

that his country inflicted on Congolese nationals during colonial times.

“On the occasion of my first trip to Congo, here, in front of the Congolese people,” the 62-year-old monarch said,

“I wish to reaffirm my deepest regrets for these wounds of the past.”

The “wounds” the Belgian king mentioned are of course particularly deep:

During Belgium’s reign, the Congolese population declined significantly as a result of a combination of murder,

starvation, exposure, disease and a plummeting birth rate..more than 10 million Congolese were killed under Belgian rule.

Besides voicing regret, King Philippe also returned to the DRC a Congolese mask,

one of the approximately 84,000 artefacts stolen between 1884 and 1960 that Belgium has pledged to return, during his visit.

Nevertheless, the monarch did nothing remotely novel or morally substantive during his time in Kinshasa to make up for

the systemic atrocities committed by his ancestors.(his present day wealth)

It's estimated that 40 percent of slave owners may have been white women.

Most Americans know that George Washington owned enslaved people at Mount Vernon. But fewer probably know that his wife, Martha..dramatically increased

the enslaved population..When they wed in 1759, George may have owned around 18 people. Martha, one of the richest women in Virginia, owned 84.

Stephanie E. Jones-Rogers, a history professor at the University of California-Berkeley: - in 1850 and 1860 census data white women make up 40 percent of slave owners.

Slaveholding parents ... “typically gave their daughters more enslaved people than land,”

“What this means is that their very identities as white southern women are tied to the actual or the possible ownership of other people.”

Owning a large number of enslaved people made a woman a better marriage prospect.

“For them, slavery was their freedom,” Jones-Rogers observes in her book.

After the Civil War, southern white women sought to recreate slavery through exploitative work contracts.

Some..wrote books portraying the institution of slavery as gentle and benign—the most famous being Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell,

a woman born 35 years after abolition.

Yet as Jones-Rogers argues in her book, it was not only white women’s “ideological and sentimental connections” to slavery that made them defend it.

Town's Black Citizens Sue Police Department Over Mississippi 'Martial Law'

Black residents of a small Mississippi town have filed a lawsuit seeking protection from their police department.

The lawsuit, obtained by Newsweek, comes after Lexington's police chief was fired last month after he was heard allegedly using racist and homophobic slurs

...Sam Dobbins, who is white, also allegedly bragged about killing 13 people and used the n-word repeatedly, including to describe someone he says he shot 119 times.

Dobbins at the time told the outlet that he was unaware of a recording, denied using slurs and declined to comment on the alleged shootings.

But the recording led to him being fired by a 3-2 vote of the city's Board of Aldermen.

Despite this, Dobbins "continues to menace the community, patrolling in the passenger seat of a police-issued vehicle with an on-duty officer," the lawsuit alleges.

The complaint says there is a pattern and culture of racism at the police department that requires further investigation and accountability.

The department "operates within a culture of corruption and lawlessness, daily and habitually subjecting Black citizens to targeting, harassment, and brutality,

including violence, in violation of their constitutional rights," the lawsuit states.

That has continued under Charles Henderson, who was appointed interim chief after Dobbins was fired, according to the lawsuit.

Henderson "played a pivotal role in many of the constitutional violations...and LPD, has continued to target and harass Black residents," the lawsuit says.

Newsweek reached out to Henderson, Dobbins, and the city of Lexington for comment.

A spokesperson for the Lexington Police Department declined to comment on the lawsuit when contacted by Newsweek.
