POLICING THE POLICE: AN EXAMINATION OF THE HOUSTON POLICE DEPARTMENT AND THEIR ROLE, REPUTATION AND EFFICACY IN THE COMMUNITY
The Earl Carl Institute for Legal & Social Policy Inc., Texas Southern University’s Barbara Jordan-Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs and School of Communications, the Houston Branch of the NAACP and The Texas Observer are hosting a panel discussion on the Houston Police Department and their role in the community entitled “Policing The Police: An Examination of The Houston Police Department And Their Role, Reputation And Efficacy In The Community”. The panel discussion will be held on Thursday, October 24, 2013 from 6:30-8:30p.m. at the Barbara Jordan-Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs McCoy Auditorium located on the campus of Texas Southern University.

This forum follows a series of articles on police brutality in Houston published by the Texas Observer entitled The Horror Every Day: Police Brutality in Houston Goes Unpunished. Desired outcomes from the event include:
• Bringing awareness and validation to the problem of police brutality in Houston
• Examining whether police brutality in Houston is about a culture and is systemic in nature
• Exploring systemic and implementable approaches to solving the problem, e.g., advocating subpoena and investigative powers for existing Citizens Complaint Review Board
The Policing the Police panel discussion is intended to be a thought provoking and substantive discussion by a panel of experts who are prepared to support their opinions with facts and statistics. Confirmed speakers are: Emily DePrang, Journalist, Texas Observer; Deric Muhammad, Community Activist; and Ray Hunt, Houston Police Officers Union. Invited panelists include: representatives from the Houston Police Department and Mayor Annise Parker’s Office and Dr, Dwight Watson, Professor, Texas State University.
