DETROIT, MI -- Theodore Wafer, 55, of Dearborn Heights will learn his fate Wednesday when he is sentenced on a conviction of second-degree murder and felonious use of a firearm.
Wafer has been jailed since a jury unanimously convicted him Aug. 7 for the murder of 19-year-old Renisha McBride on the porch of his home.
The shooting occurred Nov. 2, nearly four hours after McBride crashed into a parked car and fled the scene.
Wafer claimed self-defense, that McBride was banging on his doors, that he feared it was a home invasion and his life was in jeopardy. He also said he didn't mean to kill her when he unlocked his front door and fired through the screen striking McBride in the head. He said he didn't think the gun was loaded.
Wayne County Prosecutors in a court filing requested Wafer spend between 15 and 25 years in prison for the second-degree murder charge, The Huffington Post reports.
He will automatically spend two additional years in prison for the firearm conviction for a total of likely between 17 and 27 years.
