Texas Secretary of State Nandita Berry came to Texas Southern University to speak with student leaders about the importance of registering and voting in the upcoming November elections.
“In order for elections to be successful everyone has to vote,” Berry said. “But before you vote you must decide where you are going to vote and make sure that you have one of the seven options of identification that must be shown in order to vote.”
In speaking on the controversy of the new voter ID law that outlaws the use of student ID cards, Secretary Berry reminded the students that she does not make the laws, she only ensures that the laws are being followed.
Following her speech, Student Government, University Program Council and NAACP student leaders outlined the ways in which they intend to get TSU students out to the polls which included a three pronged approach of voter information, registration and mobilization and a Get Out to Vote rally. Deadline to register for the November 4, 2014 mid-term elections is Monday, October 6, 2014. Early voting is from Monday, October 20 – Friday, October 31.
Secretary Berry’s visited Texas Southern University as part of her 11 college tour to bring awareness to voter registration and turnout for the November elections.
