also there is still some kind of slavery still going on in africa right now the reason why it is not shown much today is that those participating in it usually do so in countries where they are protected from people on the outside seeing in, or where they have influence to hide their efforts.
The human trafficking industry, including both s*x slaves and labor slaves is alive and well. In some cases they are able to hide behind the mask of "low wage" positions. What that means is that the people earn money, but they are required to live in housing that costs more than their pay and if they want food or clothing, it is the same. In essence, they are slaves because they have no way out and their wages don't equal what they have to pay to survivechildren are often sold by their parents simply because they can't afford to feed them--and I don't mean to imply that the parents are aware of just what they're doing to their children, either.
Generally, some Westerner makes a boatload of promises of their child being given health care, nourishing food, an education--in short, all the things most parents want for their children, and the dire poverty in which they live is such that parents might be willing to sell one or more of their children in order to try and help the rest. If they agree, the child (or children) go with the Westerner into a situation that's not really much better than the one they leave.
Some are sold as domestic servants, employed in sweatshops, or sold into the s*x trade. Often the conditions they go into are at least as bad or even worse than what they left at home.
Yes, I'm sorry to say, the slave trade is still flourishing even in this year of grace 2014
