The Voice of Alabama State University, WVAS-FM (NPR station), presents the inspiring documentary “The Amazing Nina Simone” by writer and director Jeff Lieberman on Saturday, June 11, at the Capri Theatre, 1045 E. Fairview Ave.
A reception will begin at 3 p.m. and the documentary starts at 4 p.m.
“The Amazing Nina Simone” chronicles the life of the singer, songwriter, pianist and activist through more than 50 exclusive and intimate interviews with people who knew and loved her. The film answers long-held questions behind Simone’s most beloved songs, controversial statements and the reason she left America. It also spotlights her battle with bipolar disorder and how it devastated her marriage and eventually her career.
“June is African-American Music Appreciation Month and what better way to celebrate the commemorative month than to give viewers an in-depth look into the life of musical genius, Nina Simone,” said Reletta McGhee, WVAS public affairs coordinator. “This is a must-see for all music lovers, especially those who love Simone.”
