The thing that's missed is that the Cornyn amendment requiring a 3 day waiting period would give the FBI time to intervene, while still preserving Americans' right to due process. The Democrats refused to pass this common sense measure.

When I bought my first revolver in 1977, there was a five day waiting period. I was fine with that then and I would be now too.

With rifles there wasn't a waiting period. I could simply walk into a gun store and purchase a shotgun or rifle,leave with it just as long as I had the proper identification.
Today...I say no guns period.
The reason is people are not responsible owners nor do they respect human life. When one is not correctly raised to respect anything, they usually grow up not respecting anything!
Gun advocates - while not attempting to disarm you, I would like to make it clear. According to the amendment, it is truly a formed militia who/that has the right to bear arms - not the singular private citizenship. However, one must realize that law was written and implemented way back when the country was new to immigrants/those who migrated to this continent we call America. The gun was the primary defense mechanism. It was also the primary tool used to dominate as well. The folks who were already living here didn't have any rights at all according to the usurpers from across the big water - Europe. The Indians had no guns. Did that make them equal to the mighty armament of the ones who were welcomed with open arms; they who were taught to fish, hunt, build shelters, raise crops and live-stock for their very survival? Beside the infectious diseases that were brought to them, the quintessential device that eradicated many a nation was THE GUN!
What would we, could we do without them? ...Imagine a world without that advantage to "Kill and Kill Again!"

The current United States Code, Title 10 (Armed forces), section 311 (Militia: Composition and Classes), paragraph (a) states: "The militia of the United States consists of all able-bodied males at least 17 years of age and, except as provided in section 313 of title 32, under 45 years of age who are, or who have made a declaration of intention to become, citizens of the United States and of female citizens of the United States who are members of the National Guard."[42] Section 313 of Title 32 refers to persons with prior military experience. ("Sec. 313. Appointments and enlistments: age limitation (a) To be eligible for original enlistment in the National Guard, a person must be at least 17 years of age and under 45, or under 64 years of age and a former member of the Regular Army, Regular Navy, Regular Air Force, or Regular Marine Corps. To be eligible for reenlistment, a person must be under 64 years of age.(b) To be eligible for appointment as an officer of the National Guard, a person must - (1) be a citizen of the United States; and(2) be at least 18 years of age and under 64.")
These persons remain members of the militia until age 64. Paragraph (b) further states, "The classes of the militia are: (1) the organized militia, which consists of the National Guard and the Naval Militia; and (2) the unorganized militia, which consists of the members of the militia who are not members of the National Guard or the Naval Militia."[43]

Greg, the idea of the second amendment is for these citizens, age 17-45, to be prepared in the event they are called to service. That can't happen if those citizens aren't allowed to own guns.
