With the rapid change in population, there's been tension here. Worries about a threatened way of life. Worries about racism and children's safety. Worries about what the rest of Minnesota thinks of St. Cloud, given all the attention, and given the developing reputation — fair or not — as an intolerant place. Worries that inaccuracies not rooted in reality are taken and cited as fact. Worries that this grand experiment called America is stumbling in St. Cloud. http://www.mprnews.org/story/2016/02/02/a-...

A Case Study – St. Cloud, Minnesota The community of St. Cloud, with a population of 66,000, has seen an influx of some 4,500 foreign-born residents in 15 years – a 6% increase in its population. The Greater St. Cloud area, with a population of 189,000 - has seen an influx of 7,221 – a 4% increase.* When the Iraq War ended and the State of Minnesota was contemplating opening its doors to “free cases” – refugees not reuniting with family – Lutheran Social Service of MN held community stakeholder meetings in St. Cloud and were encouraged by stakeholders, especially the schools and English as a Second Language providers, to accept Iraqi refugees for resettlement in St. Cloud. After a handful of Iraqi refugees were resettled in St. Cloud, they virtually all “secondarily migrated” to the Detroit area which hosts the largest group of Iraqi refugees just as Minnesota has hosted the largest group of Hmong, Somali, and Karen refugees from Burma and North Dakota has hosted many Kurdish refugees. With an established office in St. Cloud, we began to receive family reunification cases for the growing Somali population there. LSS of Minnesota is the only MN refugee organization with an office in St. Cloud. We have settled just under 1,000 refugees in St. Cloud since 2008 – all of them reuniting with family members who already lived in St. Cloud. We plan to resettle about 215 refugees in St. Cloud in 2015. LSS Refugee Services is in conversation with community leaders in St. Cloud about how we can provide additional support for the integration of refugees into the community. While law enforcement has not disclosed the suspect's name, his father identified him as Dahir A. Adan, 22. Interviewed Sunday through a translator at his apartment in St. Cloud, Ahmed Adan said his son was born in Kenya but grew up in the United States. Other family members said Dahir Adan was beginning his third year as a student at St. Cloud State University. http://m.startribune.com/st-cloud-mall-clo...

We are almost all a nation of immigrants. As LSS of Minnesota celebrated its 150th anniversary last year, we remembered the enormous wave of immigration at the turn of the last century that built many of our churches and communities. In recent years, civil wars in other countries have caused refugees from those counties to immigrate to the United States. Now many of our new neighbors are of the Muslim faith. The American popular press has been filled with news of the “war on terror” with negative characterizations of Muslim people. Though devout Muslims have tried to counter the media with reminders that Islam is a religion of devotion to God and peace among neighbors, those voices are sometimes hard to hear. We are offering a resource to our church, and to anyone else who would like to use it, to help learn the basic tenets of Islam and understand our new neighbors. Our intention is simply that this resource will open doors, minds, and hearts and dispel stereotypes and myths about Muslim neighbors just enough to start more conversations. I am touched by the stories of Christians who are inviting Muslim imams into dialogue, accepting the invitation to participate in iftar dinners during Ramadan, and hosting community multicultural celebrations. We hope you can also use this resource to spread goodness and welcome Muslim neighbors to your community.
