Dr.Nadia Lopez is an undeniable powerhouse in the education arena. She empowers, instructs, corrects and cultivates her students with pride, creativity and a committment excellence. At the "FOUNDATION FOR LETTERS" Benefit and Gala last night guests who may not have been aware of her work got to bear witness to the warmth and dedication she encompasses. In a moment that the late educator Marva Collins would have been proud of Nadia while in the middle of accepting her award called one of her students to the stage not to brag but to remind us that her students are fueled with desire to achieve the unattainable and overcome the insurmountable. So we now understand when famed Humans of New York photographer and blogger Brandon Stanton encountere a 13 year old student in Brownsville, New York he had one question: "Who has influenced you most in your life?" The answer: his principal, Nadia Lopez, who taught him that "we have to work toward who want to be, not what society wants us to be." Lopez founded the Mott Hall Bridges Academy, hoping to provide eduational stability in the poorest neighood in New York City. What she never expected? That her story would inspire hundreds of thousands around the world, raising over $1.4 million in donations online in less than three week. Her touching book, THE BRIDGE TO BRILLIANCE, was released in August, and sure to inspure millions more.
