Are you a student or educator at a HBCU?
Have you read any of my books, and if so, what did you think?
Dear Professor:
Thank you for not immediately tossing this letter to the side upon discovering that it originated in a California State Prison. The mention of prison isn’t at all meant to define my mentality, but to provide a backdrop and the framework for some of the brightest highlights of my life over nearly a quarter century of consecutive confinement.
I’m a published author, autodidactic, and a polyglot (English, French, Spanish – in order of proficiency) with a fervent desire to carve out a niche and create a shared space in our culture now and for generations to come. By reaching out to every HBCU in the U.S. I am hereby announcing my candidacy for Viable Black Man and Asset to our communities in particular, and to the surrounding communities which constitute the whole.
My platform is one of intelligent provocation and intellectual re-animation. On my watch “sleeping dogs” will not lie, and “dead horses” will be beaten until they get up and take off running. I want to share with our young people the currency of fearlessness, self-assuredness, and cultivated perspective.
In my everyday life as Brian I’m usually kind, generous, and accommodating. But, my alter ego b.f. thames tends to write critically, thoughtfully, and bluntly…thus, unapologetically.
I would like to offer each of my latest nonfiction books to each and every HBCU free of charge, but that would be cost-prohibitive for my wife and I who tally only one another for support. If, however, any Historically Black College or University desires to stock their respective libraries, or provide copies in bulk for their students in appropriate class curriculums I would be happy to offer a very generous discount on the retail prices in exchange for non-stop public chatter about my work.
A voice is only noise if it says nothing of substance, but sometimes the right noise can awaken the sleeping even if the understanding isn’t immediate.
I appreciate your conscientious time and attention. Thank you.
Brian
