William Moore, Age 82
"Some Sundays we went to church some place. We allus liked to go any place. A white preacher allus told us to 'bey our masters and work hard and sing and when we die we go to Heaven. Marse Tom didn't mind us singin' in our cabins at night, but we better not let him cotch us prayin'.
"Seems like *****s jus' got to pray. Half they life am in prayin'. Some ***** take turn 'bout to watch and see if Marse Tom anyways 'bout, then they circle theyselves on the floor in the cabin and pray. They git to moanin' low and gentle, 'Some day, some day, some day, this yoke gwine be lifted offen our shoulders.'
"Marse Tom been dead long time now. I 'lieve he's in hell. Seem like that where he 'long. He was a terrible mean man and had a indiff'ent, mean wife. But he had the fines', sweetes' chillun the Lawd ever let live and breathe on this earth. They's so kind and sorrowin' over us slaves.
"Some them chillun used to read us li'l things out of papers and books. We'd look at them papers and books like they somethin' mighty curious, but we better not let Marse Tom or his wife know it!

When I tell people that I got this or that piece of information from former slaves...folks look at me like I'm crazy. As if the stories of our people have been lost for all times.
I thought I post the words...as stated...from our ancestors: a former slave. I pray that we learn to embrace our past, learn from it, and do men and women like the Hon. William Moore proud!
There was a time when our people swore and vowed that we would never allow anything to divide us…what happened to us?

It's amazing how disconnected our people are from their own history, their own ancestors. Most people have never heard of slave narratives or will ever think that their ancestors actually wrote(had the ability to write) their story down. It's extremely sad. Hey, but what do you expect from people who are still bound by slavery in one way or another. We have to find a way to brake the invisible shackles.

Thank you for sharing! This and other slave writings are a passion of mine and if we could get these into the curriculum for the children, then maybe...just maybe, they will understand the importance of reading and writing rather than hanging out on corners. You're the best...

It does my heart and my soul good to see that more of our people will be able to get to know and understand that the conclusions so long held(and still held by some of us today)about we are a race of people that one sizes fits us all.1. some 'slaves' were not happy slaves or able to follow orders! 2. Some slaves knew how to read and write. Some were able to accomplish being educated: as being consider as human, rewards for raising the children of the master to be productive citizens or just as pay back for making their owner's lives better for being in their lives.
Open your mindes to there is today an African-centered version of Black in America's history in four year schools. I do know that in the state of PENN it is now required in grade school. Then maybe some day the Obamas can return to the church of their choice in peace. Oprah can do so also.
Then maybe we can take a look past the prison records of those who started the Original Black Panthers and realize that their fight against 'racial profiling and miseducating us in our actual history in America will be just looked at as they were young men before their time . They put their PhD to proper use for the Black race and culture just as Rev. J. Wright and Obama and Oprah. ONE STEP At A TIME.
This can only come to be if that person know who they are, not what others believe or want them to be I life.Me, I welcome truth be it to my likings or being ready for them.I never want to stop learning each and every day.I want to be a different person so that I can fit properly in any and all different situations-century(smile)

Keep this up Dr. Glover we have so much miseducatiion to reeduacate our peopleabout . Me, I am so glad that I am over "the going to hell hump"and ready for more storyslike from your family members. My family is all oral. We pass this on generation after generation at family reunions.
The way it is told in our Black history class today the government still have just as many of our written records by slave still than they have released so far to the Black Think tank. Something else we do not know that we have.
ONe step at a time. I am just stuck in the "I never thought I would ever see an Obama" stage! But, just think if they only knew that Obama IS "an angry Black man"? Where would he be? He would be the same place that Sharpton and Jackson got in Black in America.

...Just throwing this in...I am so sure that Obama knows who he is that Joe Biden will be his VP and John Edwards will be his Attorney General...I know that I will not get my fantasy that Rev. J. Wright will hold tha Bible when he,O WELL ...Rev. Moss?????with a little J Z in the back ground? Oh, well may be in the nest 4 years,huh!(smile)
