This is like 'wow'. I'm with her though. Supporting Hillary Clinton is not a black litmus test. I beleive he said because uncle tom and doubting thomases don't sound anything alike.

A doubting thomas is "a term that is used to describe someone who will refuse to believe something without direct, physical, personal evidence; a skeptic."

Even if he thought that fit the bill, those two terms don't spin off the tongue the same way so it's almost impossible IMO that she misunderstood him. He just didn't expect to be heard.
