Obama vs. McCain -- 37 days to go. OOPS! Can We Have A Do Over? (417 hits)

Maybe the sky is not falling, but the worse day of losses in the history of the NY Stock Exchange -- PLUS Global Stock exchanges falling from 5% to 9% around the world -- is as close as anyone wants to get. The ramifications of the U.S. House of Representatives vote to defeat the "Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008" are being felt around the globe.

The United States is facing economic paralysis, and we don't know what to do about it. What is interesting is that the scale of the proposd solution is so large that the public reaction was -- "The tax payers shouldn't pay to bail out the greedy crooks on Wall Street." The response of the market to this balky reaction was a $1.2 trillion loss in one day -- much worse than the $700 billion cost of the rescue plan. Most taxpayers don't understand the necessity of this action, but perhaps a couple of days of reflection -- and a few more business failures -- will confirm the necessity to act.

SO, NOW THAT "THE MARKET" HAS OUR ATTENTION, CAN WE HAVE A DO OVER?

Our Presidential candidates are simply left to sound bites:

"This is a moment of national crisis, and today's inaction in Congress as well as the angry and hyper-partisan statement released by the McCain campaign are exactly why the American people are disgusted with Washington," the Obama-Biden campaign said in a statement released shortly after the vote.

"Barack Obama failed to lead, phoned it in, attacked John McCain and refused to even say if he supported the final bill. ... This bill failed because Barack Obama and the Democrats put politics ahead of country," Holtz-Eakin, a senior policy adviser for McCain, said.

Clearly, Presidential politics hasn't played a significant role in getting us closer to a resolution. This crisis won't lend itself to a silver bullet solution. It will require a broad-based restructuring of both our fnancial markets, our consumptions-based economy, and the housing sector, which is at the foundation of this collapse.

The question is which Presidential candidate is going to better handle the mess that gets handed to them?

Hang onto your job, and what little savings and investments you have. This is going to be a bumpy ride for all of us.

Irma,
Thanks for your comments. Those of us at the bottom of the stack have to continue our struggle to get from day today, payday to payday. I do think that President Obama will havemore of a tendency to support policies that will provide more relief for working people. It is going to be very difficult to afford many of the programs he is advocating with the cost of this "rescue" and othe stresses on the US debt.

Now, there is going to be a new vote in the Senate tomorrow -- ahead of the House returning from the 2 day recess. The drama continues.

If MSNBC is correct the stock market lost $1trillion today. And the price of gas going down $10.00 is the only thing that is going to help the poor be able to get to work, pay the rent. buy a littl e more food because of this "drop" in the oil market that is directly related to the 'average' hard working American. You know those two jobs so many had to take to make up for their outsourced one job's pay for over years and years until the out sourcing to get back to us products to threaten our health and welfare.

Congress will be able to FLY home for a one day holiday tomorrow. How many Americans who voted for them and who they expect to keep them in office could afford the gas or take a vacation this summer,or even a(sick)day off of work?

Now, what was that the government was saying about the ecomomy being in CRISIS or will this crisis be taking a paid holiday or just taking off for the next two days like the House and the Senate?

Roger, the bail out it seem will now be made to help Main Street"for real" this time around more exact with less political bull s---t in it this time around.

I also hear that it must be done by Thursday because the next job loss report will be coming out Friday and it is not going to be pretty. And may cause more to be asked to be put in the bail out. I like it better this time as I am beginning to believe that I can understand what they are talking about for the first. I do know I am more relaxed/trusting of this new version.Obama seem to be more hands on, on it this time
