Titanic America
One of the greatest movies of all time is a movie called The Titanic. This is a movie about the real life tragedy of a ship that sank in the year 1912. There have been many things written and said about that tragic event that happened in April of 1912, but for me none more compelling than the comparison with America.
The Titanic was the most impressive ship of its time. It was one of the greatest ships built in the 20th Century. The ship was built with the best materials and latest technologies. The ship was supposed to have been built so well that it was termed “the unsinkable ship”, the “safest ship ever”. The captain of the ship even went so far as to say, “not even God could sink this ship”.
The Titanic was so scientifically designed that the builders had calculated that the ship had enough watertight compartments in the hull that it could fill up 4 compartments with water and the ship would still remain afloat.
The Titanic beauty was unsurpassed. The ships passengers ranged from some of the richest and most prominent people in the world to immigrants just wanting to come to America.
This was the Maiden voyage for the Titanic. She was to journey from Southampton, England to New York with a few stops in between. After the stops in between to pick up other passengers from those countries and supplies, the Titanic set sail across the Atlantic.
On the morning of April 14, there was wireless communication between the Titanic and another liner called the Caronia, reporting “bergs, growlers and field ice”. The ship had other ice warnings. Ice, however was quite common for that time of the year in the North Atlantic and the officers were confident that they would have no trouble seeing and avoiding an iceberg in time. Besides, what could a few pieces of ice do to harm this gigantic ship?
They received more ice warnings throughout the day. One warning from a Dutch liner named Noordam reported “much ice” in the same area as the first ship. The Captain forwarded another message, however; the president casually put it in his coat pocket. The ship had covered 546 miles from the previous day and they were planning to take the ship to full speed for a short test to see what she was capable of. The ship had been performing very well up to this point.
The Titanic continued to get ice warnings throughout the day. That evening there was a party in honor of the captain being hosted by the more prominent and wealthy passengers. As the party was going on they continued to get ice warnings, Captain Stanley Lord of the steamer Californian reported passing three large icebergs three miles to the south. This message is said to never have reached Captain Smith.
To make a long story short the Titanic kept going as planned and they came to an iceberg that some reports say appeared black and hard to see from having recently flipped over. The iceberg was right in front of the Titanic and they made a hard turn to the right, which actually turns the ship to the left. At the last minute the ship began to veer to the left, it appeared that they had made it, however, there was a grinding sound that let them know that they had struck the iceberg.
After the collision with the iceberg, the only thing left to save those onboard, were the lifeboats. Nothing has provoked more outrage regarding this event than the fact the ship did not carry enough lifeboats.
The Titanic carried 20 lifeboats, four lifeboats above the required minimum of 16 lifeboats for ships over 10,000 tons, however, way below what was needed to save the lives of those aboard.
And that is what this report is about, your lifeboat. Just like the Titanic, I believe America has similar issues.
America is the most impressive Nation of its time. She is built from the best materials and the latest technologies. America also appears to be “unsinkable”. And no matter what happens to America she continues to believe she can take on more and more water and remain afloat.
America’s attractiveness is unsurpassed. And within America ranges citizens from all over the world with some of the richest and most prominent people in the world to some of the poorest people in the world.
And just like the Titanic America is headed straight for the iceberg. There have been many warnings of ice and ice fields in her path. And just like that Titanic those in first class and some second class were able to get to the life boats before those in third class and the servants.
This report is intended to give those who are not in the know the information to prepare and provide for their own lifeboats, when America can no longer take on water.
