Why I am taking a gang of girls to see The Secret Life of Bees. The new "Roots" (366 hits)

Why I'm taking my daughter and a "gang of girls" to see The Secret Life of Bees on Friday

by Pam Perry

I'm not "Adopting A Theater" for The Secret Life of Bees because:
- the novel was a New York Times Best-seller and sold 5 million copies
- it has an 'All-Star' cast
- it is the the cover story for Ebony, Jet and a host of other mags
- it has been on Oprah & every other talk show including Tom Joyner and Steve Harvey this week!

Nope. I'm taking these girls to see this movie because I want to expose them to something & have a conversation. Though the movie is not a true story, it does have a lot of "truths" in the script. The timeless truths I took away from the movie are:

Don't let others define you or tell you what you can't do. This movie was set in 1964 in the south just at the dawn of the Civil Rights era and Blacks were killed for trying register to vote.

Have faith in God. The only way to survive bad times and know the peace that passes all understanding is to know and love God.

Be Generous. By being kind to people - no matter what the color - is the right thing to do. We reap what we sow.

Guard your heart. But don't be afraid to feel your feelings. Compassion is a gift to be shared.

Stand up for what you believe in. Always know that the courage is always rewarded in the long run.

Surround yourself with people who bring out your best. Toxic people are to be dumped. Period. Better to be around friends that love you than family that abuses you.

Be part of the solution. Don't complain. Do something. Know that one person can make difference.

Live your life with character and decency. Be honest with yourself and others. Treat others they way you want to be treated.

Work hard. If you are not lazy, it's amazing what you can accomplish - even in hard times - and despite race or gender prejudices.

Honor those who have helped pave the way for us. This movie helps us to remember how far we have come as a nation and to appreciate all the struggles that African Americans have gone through - and to arrive at this political season today with Barack Obama running for President.

I am soon to have another cinematic experience, I see. My husband and I went to see "Eagle Eye" this past weekend and it was a really good movie. It got my mind wondering about all the secret projects the government has going on (namely the CIA and/or FBI in cahoots with the miiltary).

Blessings..
