"T-Painful Genius?"
I'm amazed. I'm shocked. The Devil's Devil's Advocate doesn't know what to do in these chaotic times. "Every other station I turn, every other song they churn" I hear the residue of a computerized voice. It's not Roger Troutman (deceased). A new clown is in effect and he's being marketed as the new genius. Well, I called him a clown but really he's a circus act demanding attention (BET Awards '08 during Kanye's acceptance...brilliant). Kanye, R. Kelly, and Lil' Wayne have stood in line to add new hits to their storage. They've knighted him. They consider him the new Einstein. What's wrong with this picture? How did he become the guest star on no fewer than 3 of the top 100 at any given moment. Why is he considered a genius?
I must admit that his camp constructed one of the best marketing campaigns that I've seen within the last few years. This is a guy that was in a rap group that was less successful. He then swears that he's going to make it big as a soloist...and he did. Through the grapevine, I've heard that he can hold a little note. I haven't witnessed it although I tried to hear a few riffs as he exits television appearances..
In my opinion, he has taken an instrument (vocoder or voicebox) and used it to his advantage. That projects a sound similar to Teddy Riley and Roger Troutman (do your research on the difference between the instrument sounds). Is there genius in that? Maybe. He's genius enough to know that he's not the best singer (or second best) in the state of Florida. That's kinda like a 7 foot man knowing that he doesn't have a shot at being a pro runningback. It's as genius as nursing white tigers with a golden retriever (true story).
He added a hit to an already famous Chris Brown and he put Flo Rida on the map. You name them and he's probably worked with them.
As a musician, would you take the chance at adding T-Pain to your song if it guaranteed you one hit? As a filmmaker, would you add a flavor of the month actor if you knew that it would sell $20 million over what you would've normally sold on one picture? Talk to me.
