A New Hope

As I listened to Senator McCain give his concession speech, I was saddened by the response of his supporters when President-elect Obama's name was mentioned. When I looked at the many faces of his supporters, I could only see faces that looked like his, looking at the disappointment and anger on their faces. Part of me said, 'It serves you right for clinging onto a belief that should have died a long time ago.' But the other part of me, the greater part of me said, 'I hope that you finally wake up and realize that it is time for a new path, a path that includes everybody, not just a privileged few.' We, now as a United States of America, can stand together and fight the good fight, not only for ourselves but also for our children and our children's children. Hopefully, the true greatness of this country begins with this historic first step. Just as President-elect Obama's sadness is evident when you think of his mother and grandmother's passing prior to this day, I, too am saddened when I think of my mother-in-law, my father and my brother not being here to see this day, I know that they are as proud as I am. As the world watches, so too, do those who have gone on. I will wake up tomorrow hoping and knowing that a new day has finally come.

I listened to mean-spirited booing as I watched McCain's incredibly gracious concession speech and all I could think of is that we all need to pray for this our President-elect because I fear for his safety.

Dr. Hines,
There is no need to fear. It is well with thee, me, and the first family. I am very happy to know that the efforts of many people have brought about this great and historic moment in our nation's history. The world is watching and rejoicing with us. No need to fear.

I respect him, I shake my head at his supporters and the boos I heard from the crowd as he gave his concession speech. McCain showed a degree of class that made me proud to call him a comrade and brother in the military family that we both belong.
