As an aerial shot showed the Michael Jackson cavalcade struggling through fan-soaked London traffic towards the O2 arena, the CNN presenter could barely hide his contempt over all the fuss. "And they've got a helicopter to track his bus?" he spluttered in horror. He wasn't alone. Many people here feel aggrieved that the singer is being allowed back on stage after all that to-do about the sleepovers at Neverland.

The subtext was clear: don't the Brits know they're being had? I feel their pain, having experienced similar pangs when the Duchess of York popped up in America as a diet guru. When a country goes to the trouble of consigning one of its celebrities to the dustbin, it expects everyone to abide by the ruling. Unfortunately, the celebrity gets it into his or her head that people across the Pond may not have heard all the bad stories...
