How Can We Help Black Men Graduate from HBCUs

I was reading this article on Black Men Struggling to finish at Historically Black Colleges and Universities. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29933480/ I was amazed.

I had graduated from a HWCU so the challenges I faced as a Black Student were different from my colleagues who went to HBCU. However, we always had a respect for our Brothers and Sisters who attended those institutions. It was like "Yeah, while we maybe struggling for equal access to our resources at these White Schools we just knew that was one less barrier they had to deal with.

The question is what can we do to help our young black men complete their stays at these very important institutions? I was at a Black History Expo and Fundraiser yesterday and here are some of the things I heard and saw.

I think it begins by proving to young black men that education is important and attainable. I've said this many times before, but growing up I was more likely to be asked if I played ball rather than planning to go to college. I felt so strongly about it, I started a movement - www.educatedblackman.com. I believe if we give kids and grownups alike examples of an educated black man doing exciting things thanks to a college education, people will pay attention. Slowly, but surely, we must make this change. steve@educatedblackman.com
