Nursery Rhymes:There's More Behind Them Than Just Song!

Patty cake, patty cake, baker's man. Bake me a cake as fast as you can! Sometimes the endless chants of children singing nursery rhymes can get a little bit irksome. Ever wonder where all these songs come from and what kind of nonesense are they singing about?!

Well, this is your lucky day! This quiz should enlighten parents everywhere on the meanings and origins of these playful, rhyming songs! Some of the lyrics have very ellaborate reasons for what was behind the madness, and some... not so much (some believe "London Bridge" is actually about a bridge being built and possibly collapsing in London). Although these rhymes come across as meaningless fun for children (and sometimes pain for your eardrums!), you will be surprised how well some of these songs parallel historic moments that have happened in the past for various countries.
Below are the lyrics to three such popular rhymes (some words are blanked out to omit the title of the songs or obvious key words).

Try and identify the (1) the name of the song, (2) the song's country of origin, (3) what period in history the song was created to personify and (4) why do these lyrics signify this moment? Maybe this will shed some insight to the meaning of these popular rhymes that children will undoubtedly be singing for centuries to come!

1)
_____ _____ _____ _____
Come again another day
We want to go outside and play
Come again some other day

2)
_____ and _____ got lost in the forest.
It was so dark and so bitterly cold.
They came to a little _____ _____.
Who may be the lord of this little house?

Hoo! Hoo! There shows up an old witch!
She lures the children into the _____ _____.
She appears quite friendly, but o _____, what misery!
She wants to bake him as brown as bread in the oven.

Though, as the witch looks into the oven,
She will be pushed by _____ and little _____.
The witch had to bake, the children go back home.
Now, the tale of _____ and _____ is over.

3)
_____ _____ _____,
_____ be quick,
_____ jump over the candlestick.
_____ jumped high,
_____ jumped low,
_____ jumped over and burned his toe.

It's funny. I had a collection of reference books as a child with every nursery rhyme you could ever think of...and I still have many of them memorized. I know these, but I don't need a consultation.

I won't post them here because I don't want to give away any answers, but this is cool. It brings back memories.

BTW, I'm tickled because I have created alternate rhymes for the violent ones. Rock a bye baby is one that has perplexed me since I became a parent. I don't think many people realize it's about a baby either dying or being seriously injured! LOL.

Blessings...

Humpty Dumpty,
Was actually a Goddess that was worshiped in Africa.
The story , as many others originated in the Northern city of France, around 1609-1610, called Rheims. ( rhymes, as in nursery, or Mother Goose tales ) A concept adapted to give children pleasure in story telling and keep them entertained about what some travelers discovered in foriegn lands, especially what they saw in Africa.
All of these combined with pagan and greek mythology, helped form the Christian religion and others.
Thanks for sharing.

Hansen's tales are so evil, and they describe two types of women the white angel and the dark one. When I started to sing them to my grand, I realized how violent and European white supremacist dogma they are imbued with -including Santa Claus that is of German origin! You may not be aware but Christmas is called the Day of the Nativity in other countries and gift giving is exchanged on the 6th of January.

Thank you Jennifer, good post!

I had no idea about some of these nursery rhymes and I really appreciate the feed back ladies. It's really nice to know where these things come from and what some of these nursery rhymes are all about.

There are many stories as to where Humpty Dumpty originated. For instance, did you know that in one story (backed by historical events) states that Humpty Dumpty wasn't a PERSON, but a THING???????????? Yep. Humpty Dumpty was a CANNON!!!!

Here's a little history:

"The historical events detailing the siege of Colchester are well documented - references to the cannon ( Humpty Dumpty) are as follows:

June 15th 1648 - St Mary's Church is fortified and a large cannon is placed on the roof which was fired by ‘One-Eyed Jack Thompson'

July 14th / July 15th 1648 - The Royalist fort within the walls at St Mary's church is blown to pieces and their main cannon battery ( Humpty Dumpty) is destroyed.

August 28th 1648 - The Royalists lay down their arms, open the gates of Colchester and surrender to the Parliamentarians

A shot from a Parliamentary cannon succeeded in damaging the wall beneath Humpty Dumpty which caused the cannon to tumble to the ground. The Royalists, or Cavaliers, 'all the King's men' attempted to raise Humpty Dumpty on to another part of the wall. However, because the cannon , or Humpty Dumpty, was so heavy ' All the King's horses and all the King's men couldn't put Humpty together again!' "

I find things like this fascinating!!! Thanks for posting this, Jen.

Brother Earl...now you know you need to stop the presses!! Oh Lawdy have mercy....(((Lol)))
Dee 'get out of town'. That is so interesting. I had no idea that Humpty was a cannon. (((Lol))) That just goes to show that Humpty Dumpty was as much an adult rhyme as it is a child's. I wonder if this is technically considered a form of rapping. I guess so since rap is a form of poetry, eh? Thanks again for the information.

By the way, what is Snow white and Sleeping Beauty about?? I know it must be something awful, but I still want to know.

Brother Earl and Sister Irma,
I will admit that I never considered those rhymes as nursery rhymes although I did learn them in my childhood. I guess that just shows me how I have been brained washed to think if it doesn't appear in Mother Goose's Nursery Rhymes then it's not really a nursery rhyme. I have already checked myself. Thanks again for that reality check. (((smiles)))

There was a special some years ago(I believe on the History channel)about Nursery Rhymes, and it was mind blowing. Until then, I thought these were for learning to read and to sing for the children on their level and not about anything else. But as they say behind each myth is a real story some where, I guess...

ROBINSON IRMA Thursday, April 10th 2014 at 6:47PM

Earl I know those also and said these as a child...May be we have some for the area were grow up in in this country. Very interesting, huh?
