My Review: The Diary of a Tired Black Man
On a serious note, I found myself being drawn into the story to the point that I actually felt sorry for both Tanya (Paula Lema) and James ((Jimmy Jean-Louis) because they couldn’t come together to sort out their marital problems which in my opinion were largely due to Tanya’s unwillingness to cooperate. Some of the things Tanya does will make some people’s mouths drop to the floor!
Although there were some little embellishments here and there to accomplish a specific view point, I saw the sense in the overall message of the film… that good black men do exist and that (some not all) black women have real issues with anger or for a lack of a better term... “Angry Black Woman Syndrome” or ABWS. I would’ve loved to see Tim Alexander, the filmmaker expound more on the cycle of abuse some women experience; perhaps a little more attention could have been focused on the cycle of abuse, the domino effects abuse has on the psyche of a woman, and the challenges of overcoming it. In these cases, professional help should be sought such as counseling with a psychologist or with a professional counselor rather than consulting other women who have been disappointed and become bitter against men.
In closing, I was able to reflect on my own past experiences and the experiences of other women that I watched growing up that were similar to Tanya’s. The lesson I learned from watching this film is that everyone should do their best to find happiness in their relationships. I rate the film a 4 star out of 5 stars... it’s a definite must see!! http://www.tiredblackman.com
P.S. There is a profanity free version of the film included.
