My Review: The Diary of a Tired Black Man

My Review: The Diary of a Tired Black Man

I must say that although the Diary of a Tired Black Man wasn’t what I expected initially, I really enjoyed it!! The film had an easy to follow story line. The Diary of a Tired Black Man is comprised of a series of mini clips viewed by people on the streets in various major cities throughout the U.S. Some opinions, perspectives, and experiences of people on the street were strong at times, but funny as well as believable. For example there was a man who actually said he believed women were out to “pimp the minds of men”. (((Lol)))

On a serious note, I found myself being drawn into the story to the point that I actually felt sorry for both Tanya (Paula Lema) and James ((Jimmy Jean-Louis) because they couldn’t come together to sort out their marital problems which in my opinion were largely due to Tanya’s unwillingness to cooperate. Some of the things Tanya does will make some people’s mouths drop to the floor!

Although there were some little embellishments here and there to accomplish a specific view point, I saw the sense in the overall message of the film… that good black men do exist and that (some not all) black women have real issues with anger or for a lack of a better term... “Angry Black Woman Syndrome” or ABWS. I would’ve loved to see Tim Alexander, the filmmaker expound more on the cycle of abuse some women experience; perhaps a little more attention could have been focused on the cycle of abuse, the domino effects abuse has on the psyche of a woman, and the challenges of overcoming it. In these cases, professional help should be sought such as counseling with a psychologist or with a professional counselor rather than consulting other women who have been disappointed and become bitter against men.

In closing, I was able to reflect on my own past experiences and the experiences of other women that I watched growing up that were similar to Tanya’s. The lesson I learned from watching this film is that everyone should do their best to find happiness in their relationships. I rate the film a 4 star out of 5 stars... it’s a definite must see!! http://www.tiredblackman.com

P.S. There is a profanity free version of the film included.

Marta trust me when I tell you that you haven't heard the half of it so go out and get the film, because it is truly entertaining! I sat down with my husband and watched it on Saturday night and he was still talking about it on the way to church the next morning!! As one man said, "It is a very power bit of drama".

Shontae,
I am with you regards the ABWS whether it should be called this or not, but I guess to find a term for a peculiar behavior--- ABWS has to work for now until we can come up with something else better to call it. (((Lol))) It is true for this film, we can both agree why it ( ABWS) is called such.

Thanks ladies for your comments as they are very encouraging. I'm a little "gun shy" about blogging out front here. I kind of hang in the news post section. (((smiles)))

Doc it is a definite must see, but let me warn you... it's not for the weak but for the strong!! (((Lol))) Some stuff will bring pain and anger if a woman isn't ready to face the grim reality of the state of black relationship matters. Ok, nuff said. (((smiles)))

Hey Jen... Make sure to look at the director's commentary version of the film in the special features menu. It explains all of the missing peaces in the movie that you mentioned - some have said it makes the movie even 10 times better!

Thanks for the great review!

If anyone is looking for try Walmart - they are a big supporter of this film!

I finally had the chance the other day to listen to the producer's commentary and it was great to hear him explain the scenes and talk more in depth about the state of black relationship issues.
